‘Hejira’ is a 7-piece band set up to celebrate and honour the masterpiece works of Joni Mitchell, mostly from the late ‘70s. Having released the albums ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns’, ‘Hejira’, ‘Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter’ and ‘Mingus’ (regarded as her ‘jazz period’), Joni then toured briefly with a band formed from the crème de la crème of contemporaneous jazz musicians (Metheny, Mays, Brecker, Pastorius and Alias). The tour was recorded, producing the outstanding live album, ‘Shadows And Light’; it is from this album that the band Hejira is drawing the body of its repertoire. Comprising highly experienced jazz musicians, this band is fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has - in her own way - assimilated the poise, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms. Expect an evening of the ‘great’ songs from Mitchell’s back catalogue! More information here

A special concert commissioned by Llais to pay homage to singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, focusing largely on two albums that were fully orchestrated: ‘Both Sides Now’ (2000) and ‘Travelogue’ (2002), performed by special guest singers Charlotte Church, Laura Mvula, ESKA and Gwenno, and BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Mitchell, one of the most celebrated and influential artists of her generation, originated in the American folk scene of the 1960s, along with the likes of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, and she quickly established herself as a visionary writer and activist.

The album ‘Both Sides Now’ was conceived as a song cycle documenting a relationship from initial flirtation to optimistic consummation, ending in disillusionment and ironic despair, and finally the philosophical overview of acceptance and the probability of the cycle repeating itself.

Always open to experimentation, Mitchell later started to include jazz influences in her writing as evident in albums such as ‘Court and Spark’ and the lush orchestrations we hear on ‘Both Sides Now’ and ‘Travelogue’.

Over the past five decades, Joni Mitchell has created a body of songs and recordings that defies definition. Her influence on subsequent generations of musicians, from Prince to Taylor Swift to Diana Krall, is almost unmatched. She is the bridge between the rise of the folk singer after World War II and the current generation of multimedia musical artists. In this course, we will study six recordings that marked Mitchell’s transition from an ethereal folk performer to a badass jazz/rock innovator who collaborated with such major figures as Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. We will look closely at her lyric style and her unique approach to musical composition, tuning, and sound. The instructor will present perspectives and insights into Mitchell’s writing, and together we will discuss the following albums: Ladies of the Canyon, Blue, For the Roses, Court and Spark, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, and Hejira. The instructor will circulate some reading about Mitchell’s work, focusing on a different theme each week. More information here

On the heels of Joni Mitchell’s first public performance in more than two decades comes EMILY GROVE’S JONI JAM – A TRIBUTE TO JONI MITCHELL, which celebrates and brings to life the rich and diverse music of the great JONI MITCHELL in a way that only Emily Grove and her uniquely talented musical friends can. Joni’s body of work spans genres from folk to rock to pop to jazz, and she has gained respect and influenced fellow artists in all of them. Exploring albums like Blue, Ladies of the Canyon, Hejira, Mingus and more, some of the region’s favorite young musicians – including guest vocalists – will joyfully present this challenging material.

EMILY GROVE, a singer-songwriter in her own right, has won several Asbury Music Awards, and has toured throughout the US, the UK and Europe. Having attended Berklee College of Music, she has a true appreciation of Joni’s jazz explorations as well as her folk classics. She has been performing JONI MITCHELL songs since she was 15: at Glen Burtnik’s “Summer of Love” concert, at the “One Last Waltz” show at the Pollack Theater , and as a busker on the Asbury Park boardwalk (as Joni once busked in Toronto).

“Listen for the little magical nuances in her delivery…just like everything about Grove, there is something of a throwback to her quality, an old grain, an antique lily lace, but with an equal measure of something new and young and fresh.” Steve Rogers, Driving Jersey. More information here

I’d like to share my passion for Joni Mitchell with you.

Born in New York, my family immigrated to Israel when I was 12 years old. It was there that I first heard Joni’s music. She immediately seeped into my bones.

Morning, noon, and night I walked the streets of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Jericho, singing her songs. Later, in Paris, she hovered over my left should as I composed.

Our jazz quartet celebrates Joni. Each musician is a multi- instrumentalist creating rich soundscapes. Three voice harmonies abound. Between the songs I tell stories of H, a teenager in Jerusalem in the 70’s, bewitched by Joni.

Haim Isaacs voice
Frédéric Reynier piano, percussions
Jules Lefrançois drums, tuba, backup vocals
Yann-Lou Bertrand double bass, trumpet, backup vocals

In what will be an unforgettable celebration of her music and art rather than a typical tribute, ‘This is Joni’ offers something for everyone, and not just for solid fans of Joni Mitchell’s extensive musical history.

Written and performed by Melbourne singer/song writer, Lauren Elizabeth, the audience will be taken through an exploration of memorable songs from the legendary singer/songwriter, who defined a generation through her music. It is impossible to categorize Joni’s sound, as she explored so many genres, and this show pays homage to them all.

Performing her many hits such as ‘Help Me’, ‘Big Yellow Taxi’, ‘Blue’ and ‘Free Man In Paris‘, plus a collection of songs spanning Joni’s 40-odd year career, Lauren will perform with her outstanding 6 piece band, comprising some of Melbourne’s finest musicians and special guest vocalists.

The show will also explore the artist and painter that is Joni Mitchell and the work she has produced, dating back to the early 1950’s, right up to the present day.

‘This is Joni’ introduces Lauren Elizabeth, a Monash Performing Arts alumni who has been performing throughout Melbourne and Australia for over 15 years. Her most credited work includes numerous appearances on Channels 9 & 10, performances with the Melbourne Sydney Symphony Orchestra, singing alongside artists such as Kate Ceberano, Ross Wilson, Daryl Braithwaite, Joe Camilleri, Vika Bull and Vince Jones, and more recently working as the backing vocalist for studio albums by The Black Sorrows.

Lauren explains, “I was introduced to Joni’s music when I was 12 years old by my father, and that’s when I decided I wanted to become a singer myself. She is without question my greatest musical inspiration. Writing and performing this show will be an incredible highlight in my career.”

Lauren Elizabeth – vocals
Nathan Liow – piano
Philip Rex – bass
Sam Lemann – guitar
Sam Lescovic – drums

Duoen "Roses for Joni" frå Italia
Christina Friis-Nielsen frå Danmark
Emma Sævik
Vegard Kvamme Holum
Tolvtetten
Orkester med strykarar og blåsarar
Orkesterleiar Magnus M. Joelson

More information here

From early folk to folk-rock, to jazz and pop music, Joni Mitchell continually evolved and pushed the envelope, defying critics and fans, who wanted her to stay the lithe and lovely, gentle folk faerie that they fell in love with in the 60’s. Joni is a true pioneer, blazing a trail for women in music for decades to come, by never compromising her artistry. More information here

A & M studios in California 1971 was the birthplace of three timeless classic albums. Joni Mitchell’s Blue and Carole King’s Tapestry were recorded in adjacent studios. Just down the hall, James Taylor was recording Mud Slide Slim, and the three friends shared session players, inspirations, lunches and also added harmonies and instruments to each other's albums.

At The Brunswick in Brighton UK on April 13th 2023, Lucy Pickering and her band Court & Spark will perform their favourite Joni Mitchell, Carole King and James Taylor songs in an evening of Laurel Canyon highlights such as Carey, Country Road, A Case Of You and I Feel The Earth Move. In addition they’ll be adding songs by Rickie Lee Jones, the West Coast 1970’s artist most famous for her smash hit Chuck E’s In Love. They recently played to a packed house at Shoreham’s Ropetackle Arts Centre, and are delighted to be back at The Brunswick before taking the show further afield in 2023.

Lucy Pickering’s Court & Spark celebrate the songs of an unforgettable era of great music, bringing together some of Sussex’s finest musicians in a fruitful jazz/folk/pop collaboration. Lucy’s vocals and piano-playing pay faithful tribute to the singer-songwriter stylings of the early 1970’s, and the band add an exciting West Coast vibe that recalls Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Russ Kunkel and Tom Scott’s LA Express in their heyday.

I will be performing a concert in Trondheim, Norway on March 17, together with my tribute band «WE ARE STARDUST» - a group of friends who met 25 years ago in high school playing Joni's songs. We are all educated musicians now, performing in bands and orchestras in Norway, but with the same passion for Joni's songs, and I guess, a deeper understanding for the lyrics now than when we were youngsters. We are looking forward to perform a lot of songs from the albums «Court and Spark», «Hejira» and «Blue», a couple of songs from the «Mingus» album, other hits like «Flat Tires», «Woodstock», «Big Yellow Taxi» and of course the most beautiful song ever written «Both Sides Now».

Heidi Skjerve: Vocals, piano
Marthe Belsvik Stavrum: Flute, background vocals, percussion
Øivind Dybvig Johnsen: Saxophone, guitar, background vocals
Magnus Slørdal: Guitars, background vocals
Andreas Hamre: Bass, acoustic guitar, background vocals
Stian Lundberg: Drums, percussion, background vocals

Four of the region’s strongest female lead voices will celebrate Joni Mitchell‘s music at Cohoes Music Hall on March 11. On a not to be missed night, the four women will come together to celebrate Mitchell’s memorable career.

Local greats Belle-Skinner, Zan & the Winter Folk, Hold on Honeys, and Girl Blue will perform her beloved music in their own voices at the Hall. Each of these women has emerged in Nippertown as a strong artist in their own right and will combine forces to recreate the magic of Mitchell’s music starting at 8 pm.

Zan Strumfeld, now of the Winter folk but previously a solo artist is well beloved for lullabies and ballads, as well as bluegrass and rock. Herself a compelling figure on stage, Zan’s presence commands attention that will lend itself well to Mitchell’s vibe.

Belle-Skinner has a soprano voice that she lends to music to create nostalgia for the listener, and she’s been compared to Mitchell by reviewers. Her music is described as both haunting and beautiful, capturing the essence of melodic lyrics.

Newcomers Hold On Honeys will bring a younger vibe to this concert. The trio of women from Troy, Emily Curro, Raya Malcolm, and Shannon Rafferty sing three-part harmony with show stopping accuracy and beauty.

And finally, Girl Blue, Troy’s Arielle O’Keefe, will add a sexy and powerful voice to the mix. If you’ve heard Girl Blue before, you’ve likely cried, jumped, and danced all in one set. O’Keefe’s well-known control over her pitch while letting loose with volume and energy should shine some extra magic on the night.

Tickets are still available at Cohoes Music Box Office (518) 434-0776. More information here

On the 3rd March, Peggy’s Skylight will be putting on a celebratory concert of music by the unique, brilliant and inspirational artist, Joni Mitchell. Bandleader for the project, Pete Oxley, writes:

"I have long been a massive fan of Joni Mitchell’s music, ranging from the sparse, folky early albums (such as ‘Blue’) to the late, gorgeously lush albums arranged by the brilliant Vince Mendoza (‘Both Sides Now’ and ‘Travelogue’). Somewhere in the middle of her career was what some people describe as her ‘jazz period’ - and it is from this era that we will be creating the programme for this gig.

Many of you will be aware of the album called ‘Shadows And Light’. This is a 'Desert Island Disc’ for me - not just because her band comprises a whole load of my favourite musicians, but because as a live album, it fizzes with an incredible, electric atmosphere from the off! The songs on the album are beautiful, exciting and, as always with Joni, totally touching in the poignancy of the lyrics. There is a DVD of this concert and it is clear that Joni must have been totally living the dream, performing her masterpiece works with this group".

And so to our band for the 3rd March: firstly, taking on the role of Joni Mitchell will be Hattie Whitehead - who not only pulls off the qualities of Mitchell’s singing…but also plays guitar like Joni, involving all sorts of Mitchell’s ‘open tunings'! Hattie grew up, surrounded by world-class musicians - being the daughter of the outstanding saxophonist, Tim Whitehead. Aside from mastering Joni’s mannerisms, Hattie is a great singer/songwriter in her own right: she won the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition in 2016 and has had hundreds of thousands of streams of her original works listened to.

The band also features the superb (New Jazz Generation) keyboard player, Chris Eldred. Chris was winner of the Yamaha 'Award for Outstanding Jazz Musicians’ and was the keyboardist with the National Youth Jazz orchestra (NYJO) between 2008 and 2014.

For the purposes of not going on at length here - and because most of you will be aware of their work - we’ll just list the total personnel for this gig; however, let us assure you that this line-up comprises only very, very fine players! The band will be:

Hattie Whitehead ~ vocals & guitar
Ollie Weston ~ tenor & soprano saxophones
Chris Eldred ~ keyboards
Pete Oxley ~ guitar
Dave Jones ~ bass
Rick Finlay ~ drums
Keith Fairbairn ~ percussion

Lauren and The Good Souls came together as a band to honor Joni 6 years ago, and have been together since. If you know Joni Mitchell’s music, you know the complexity, beauty, depth and evolution of her songwriting. Each member of Lauren and The Good Souls is a multi-instrumentalist, making their ability to cover Joni’s expansive repertoire a reality. From the intimate acoustic moments, horn section swells and orchestral arrangements, this band can cover it all.

Throughout their years of putting on this event, The Good Souls have brought on many guest musicians and live painters for a fully immersive Joni experience. This year we are so excited to announce that Mike Brown, Timothy Mitchum Jr., Mary Monroe with Nate Coffey, Kristina Suski and Julia Weatherholtz will be our musical guests and Miss Casey Maura will be painting live for the event

The band's love and admiration for Joni’s music, and for each other, will captivate and engage the audience, making an evening that is truly something special.

One addition and also a loss this year, is that we will be honoring the life of Sara Rogers, our beloved bandmate that was tragically killed in a bicycle accident this past June. We will be selling some merchandise that she designed to raise money for a music therapy scholarship at Nazareth college that will be set up in her honor

The band consists of…
Lauren Faggiano – vocals, guitar, piano & dulcimer
Ken Schumacher – bass
Sungmin Shin – lead guitar
Cindy Tag – saxophones, clarinet and flutes
Joe Cappadonia – trumpet & flugel horn
Dominic Marini – drums, trombone & vocals
Nelson Rivera – percussion and tenor saxophone
Amanda Dimino – vocals, cello and piano
