Known for: One of the founding members and guitarist/vocalist of The Eagles, along with Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner.
Early success: Frey was a teen heartthrob in his hometown during the mid-1960s in bands such as The Mushrooms, the Subterraneans and the Heavy Metal Kids.
Major hits: The Eagles had 13 Top 20 hits, including five that reached No. 1. Of those, Frey sang lead vocal on at least five: Take It Easy, Tequila Sunrise, New Kid In Town, Lyin' Eyes and Heartache Tonight.
After the Eagles disbanded, Frey began a solo career in 1982 and enjoyed Top 40 hits such as I Found Somebody, The One You Love, Smuggler's Blues and The Heat Is On.
Private life: Frey is married and has three children. The Freys have homes in California, Colorado and Hawaii.
Henley on Frey (in an interview with the Eagles Official Fan Club): "We gave Glenn a nickname, The Lone Arranger. He had a vision about how our voices could blend and how to arrange the voices and, in many cases, the tracks. He also had a knack for remembering and choosing good songs.
"When Jackson (Browne) shelves Take It Easy because he couldn't complete it, it was Glenn who remembered the song and asked Jackson about it one day."
Frey wound up helping Browne finish the lyrics and it became the Eagles' first hit record.
On the record: Frey's comments to the Eagles' Official Fan Club about ...
Songwriting: "It's a lot like pushing a boulder up a hill."
Hotel California: "It was definitely thinking and writing outside the box. We have never written any song like it before.
"The song began as a demo tape, an instrumental by Don Felder. It immediately got our attention. The first working title, the name we gave it, was Mexican Reggae."
How he stumbled upon the melody for The Best Of My Love: "I was playing acoustic guitar one afternoon, and I was trying to figure out a tuning that Joni Mitchell had shown me a couple of days earlier. I got lost and ended up with the guitar tuning for what would later turn out to be The Best of My Love."
