Joni's inspiration for this video is her mother who upon listening to the album CHALK MARK IN A RAINSTORM told her, "I just love that song, Dancin' Clown. I put my walkman on and I dance around the kitchen."

The super 8mm film footage of Joni dancing alone in her kitchen stars her cat, El Cafe (named for a Mexican restaurant in Kauai, Hawaii). Billy Idol and Tom Petty have singing character roles. Billy Idol is the growling bully named Rowdy Yates who taunts Jesse, a sensitive boy, sung by Tom Petty.
