Trina Robbins, who as an artist, writer and editor of comics was a pioneering woman in a male-dominated field, and who as a historian specialized in books about female cartoonists, died on Wednesday in San Francisco. She was 85.

In 1970, Ms. Robbins was one of the creators of It Ain’t Me Babe, the first comic book made exclusively by women. In 1985, she was the first woman to draw a full issue of Wonder Woman, and a full run on a Wonder Woman series, after four decades of male hegemony.

The first verse of Joni’s song “Ladies of the Canyon,” is a portrait of Ms. Robbins:

Trina wears her wampum beads
She fills her drawing book with line
Sewing lace on widow’s weeds
And filigree on leaf and vine.

Trina answered a few questions about the song for the website in 2008.

Joni won her 10th Grammy in last night's ceremony in Los Angeles - 11th if you include her Lifetime Achievement Award. She won Best Folk Album for the 2023 release of "At Newport".

Joni won her first Grammy in 1970, but her first actual singing appearance on the awards show didn’t take place until last night, as she sang “Both Sides Now” - done “Joni Jam”-style, with Joni seated on a comfortable-looking throne with her recent trademark cane, surrounded by similarly seated all-star accompanists. On her 80th birthday, Roundhouse and Lail Arad announce a celebration of Joni Mitchell; one of the most highly regarded and influential singer-songwriters of the 20th century as part of In The Round Festival. One of the first women in modern rock to achieve enviable longevity and critical recognition, Mitchell has been a major inspiration to music's biggest names including Bob Dylan, Prince, Donna Summers, Bjork, James Blake and Lana Del Rey.

Frequently confessional, sometimes obscure, always literate and musically adventurous, she has created one of the most striking bodies of work in the popular music of the last 6 decades.

Hosted by Cerys Matthews, a stellar line up of artists join us for this special intimate evening of stripped back performances set on the circular In The Round stage. Covering some of Joni's best work are Emeli Sandé, Vashti Bunyan, Lail Arad, Sam Amidon, Kate Stables (This Is The Kit) and Eska. More information here

‘Hejira’ is a 7-piece band set up to celebrate and honour the masterpiece works of Joni Mitchell, mostly from the late ‘70s. Having released the albums ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns’, ‘Hejira’, ‘Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter’ and ‘Mingus’ (regarded as her ‘jazz period’), Joni then toured briefly with a band formed from the crème de la crème of contemporaneous jazz musicians (Metheny, Mays, Brecker, Pastorius and Alias). The tour was recorded, producing the outstanding live album, ‘Shadows And Light’; it is from this album that the band Hejira is drawing the body of its repertoire. Comprising highly experienced jazz musicians, this band is fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has in her own way - assimilated the poise, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms.
