There are a handful of songs in Joni Mitchell's catalog that people associate with Christmas, even if they aren't explicitly about the day itself. She has written a number of popular tracks that are perfectly suited for the winter months, and for many people, that makes them holiday compositions.
Two of Mitchell's wintery tracks are back on the charts in the United Kingdom this week. This is a big moment for the cuts - which rank among her most familiar songs - as interest in them is higher right now than perhaps at any other point throughout the calendar year.
"River" is the bigger hit between Mitchell's two comebacks. It's the only one of her songs that manages to find space on several charts at once.
Mitchell's wistful tune, which is all about skating away on a frozen river, rises highest on the Official Singles Downloads chart, as it returns at No. 93. The same title is also back on the Official Singles Sales list, but only barely, as it lands at No. 99 on the 100-spot roster.
"Both Sides Now" also mounts a comeback, even though it's not usually connected to Christmas - except for its use in the beloved holiday film Love, Actually. That single, which may be Mitchell's most famous, breaks back onto the Official Singles Downloads chart at No. 99, in second-to-last place.
Between those two hits, "Both Sides Now" has climbed furthest north, at least among the charts they appear on this week. Throughout the dozens of frames it's spent on the Official Singles Downloads list, the tune has peaked at No. 7, making it the only top 10 smash among the bunch.
The success of those two songs also appears to be raising one of Mitchell's compilations, as well. Her simply-titled Hits likewise returns to one tally, the Official Album Downloads chart. On that ranking, the singles-packed project is back at No. 77.
