Joni Mitchell is back on the charts in America this week, but not with anything new. The singer-songwriter returns with one of her oldest releases, one which changed her career - and which is apparently still incredibly popular to this day.
The Hissing of Summer Lawns debuts on a pair of Billboard charts this week. The set was released in 1975, but it arrives on two tallies anyway. The lists it appears on this frame didn't exist when it first dropped, and now it's become a bestseller once more.
Mitchell's genre-shifting project reappears thanks to a new re-release on vinyl. The title was issued for sale via Vinyl Me, Please, and thousands of fans picked up a copy of The Hissing of Summer Lawns from the company. All those purchases help the effort become a winner once more.
The Hissing of Summer Lawns debuts at No. 6 on the Vinyl Albums chart this week. That's her all-time career peak on Billboard's list of the bestselling full-lengths and EPs on the format.
Mitchell peaked at No. 6 - for the first time - back in 2022. Blue Highlights: Demos, Outtakes, Live earned the singer-songwriter her first top 10 on the Vinyl Albums chart.
Altogether, Mitchell has pushed just five titles to the Vinyl Albums chart. The list was inaugurated long after the Grammy winner's moment in the spotlight, so it's not shocking that her total isn't higher. If the roster had been around in the '70s, she surely would have earned many more placements throughout her career.
In the past tracking week, The Hissing of Summer Lawns sold just under 3,600 copies, according to Luminate. Representatives for Vinyl Me, Please state that the company's sale of Mitchell's album is responsible for most of those purchases.
