Joni Mitchell made a rare outing Saturday to the attend a birthday party for a family friend.
The 80-year-old singer, who has suffered some serious health problems over the years, walked with the help of a cane as she exited the gathering held in honor of Katherine Short's 40th birthday at Grand Master Recorders in Hollywood. She is the daughter of fellow Canadian and actor Martin Short, 73.
The party also included appearances from other stars, including longtime lovebirds Kurt Russell, 72, and Goldie Hawn, 78.
Joni looked festive in a shimmering gold top and matching pants which she covered with a lacy black knee-length sweater.
She wore black shoes with a slight heel and a black beret.
The Big Yellow Taxi singer wore her long, blonde hair in the trademark braid that's become synonymous with her style.
She accessorized with several stacked necklaces of gold and precious stones.
The Both Sides Now singer was accompanied by a friend who shared her own rock and roll style, wearing a body-con maxi dress with a zebra-inspired print, a black sweater and black boots.
She underwent emergency surgery for a brain aneurysm in 2015, which impacted her ability to walk, talk, sing and play instruments.
Many initially assumed that Mitchell would never perform again, but intense physical therapy and practice eventually allowed to her to regain much of her previous skills.
She wowed audiences when she showed she was again a capable performer when she made an acclaimed appearance at the 2022 Newport Jazz Festival. Her most recent on-stage performance was in October at the Brandi Carlile and Friends show at the Hollywood Bowl.
Mitchell has also previously said she suffers from a condition called Morgellons disease, in which 'fibers in a variety of colors protrude out of my skin like mushrooms after a rainstorm: they cannot be forensically identified as animal, vegetable or mineral,' the singer told the Los Angeles Times in 2010.
However, the condition doesn't have a known organic basis and is believed to instead to be a delusional psychiatric condition.
Family friends Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell attended the gathering marking the milestone birthday. Goldie was wrapped up in a warm black wool coat.
The Oscar winner wore black skinny pants and loafers. Her blonde hair was styled in loose waves with curtain bangs. v The guest of honor, Katherine Short, stepped out in a sparkling silver gown with an empire waist, butterfly sleeves and a scoop neck.
Her long, red hair was styled straight and she was presented with a pink crown with the words 'Birthday Girl.'
Instead of following her father into show business, Katherine has instead taken a different route and works as a licensed social worker in a private practice. She is also a supporter of the charity Bring Change 2 Mind, 'whose mission it is to erase the stigma surrounding mental health,' according to her website.
She has a service dog named Joni Mitchell, who the mental health practitioner says has helped her with her own struggles for five years.
Katherine is the oldest child and only daughter of Martin Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman. She has two younger brothers, Oliver, 37, and Henry, 34. All of the Short children were adopted and one of Katherine's specialties in helping families brought together by adoption.
Martin was beaming as he mingled with guests, wearing classic black suit with a navy blue button down shirt and black shoes.
Kurt, 72, looked dapper in a gray wool jacket over a navy blue button down shirt and black slacks.
The Monarch: Legacy of Monsters star brushed his long salt and pepper hair away from his face and wore black square framed glasses.
Other guests included actress Julianne Phillips, 63, who looked ageless in an black.
The former Sisters star's blonde hair was styled in long, loose curls. She was accompanied to the party by a male companion.
