Joni Mitchell, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Chuck Mangione and the Charlie Daniels Band head the list of rock and pop acts scheduled to play Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre this summer.

Only 10 shows were announced this week for the amphitheater's 1983 season, although facility operators hope to stage as many as 60 concerts before Irvine Meadows' concert season ends this fall.

Mitchell, who will be at the amphitheater June 16, will be making her first appearance at Irvine Meadows. Other first-timers include ZZ Top (June 25), America (June 26), A Flock of Seagulls (July 10), Chuck Mangione (July 15) and Rick Springfield (Sept. 18).

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, which played during Irvine Meadows' abbreviated first season in 1981, returns to the venue June 10, as previously announced. Other repeat performers include James Taylor (Sept. 16) and Kenny Loggins (Sept. 23). The Charlie Daniels Band, which will play July 31, will be making its third appearance at Irvine Meadows.

Tickets will go on sale Monday for the Joni Mitchell and America concerts. On Tuesday, tickets will go on sale for the ZZ Top, A Flock of Seagulls and Chuck Mangione concerts. Tickets for the Charlie Daniels Band and James Taylor shows will go on sale Wednesday. Tickets will go on sale Thursday for Rick Springfield and Kenny Loggins performances.

Although the preliminary schedule as announced this week has a somewhat conservative pop flavor, shows to be added in coming weeks are expected to include more rock and new wave acts, said Jeff Apregan, Irvine Meadows' director of operations.

"There's no conscious effort to feature or exclude one type of music," Apregan said. "It's more a function of which acts are available. We hope to have as many different types of music as possible."
