Joni finds her child of the Sixties Print-ready version

The singer Joni Mitchell is to speak publicly within a few days about her reunion with the daughter she put up for adoption more than 30 years ago, according to her agent.

"There's sort of a fairytale ending," Ms Mitchell's father told a Canadian newspaper yesterday, after it emerged that the folksinger had succeeded in finding and meeting her daughter, whom she gave away before she was famous.

The daughter, born in 1965 and now a model, was looking for her birth mother when Ms. Mitchell began her search last year.

Bill Anderson, Ms. Mitchell's father, would not give details about the reunion or where his only granddaughter lives. He found out her identity 10 days ago and is hoping to meet her soon. "We've seen pictures and you can see the similarities."

Mr. Anderson lives in the prairie province of Saskatchewan where Ms. Mitchell, who was born Roberta Joan Anderson, grew up. She was an art student in the neighbouring province of Alberta when she met the child's father, Brad McGrath, who is now a photographer in Toronto.

Last year, when Ms. Mitchell began her search for her daughter, Mr. McGrath said the couple had not been ready to marry and settle down when the baby was born. So they put her up for adoption in 1965.

Ms. Mitchell's agent, Bob Merlis, said his client is not ready to speak publicly about her reunion, but will make a statement in a few days.

Last year however, while seeking her daughter, Ms. Mitchell said: "It would be nice if she could meet her grandparents while they're still alive."

Ms. Mitchell, aged 53, began her career singing in Canadian coffee houses. She has kept her Canadian citizenship and owns a home on 40 acres of land north of Vancouver, where she writes most of her songs.

The New York Post reported that it sent private detectives to find her daughter, who looks much like her mother did in her flower child days.
