Channeling their inner Joni Print-ready version

Singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has been described as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. It's an intimidating description.

But with such late 1960s songs "Chelsea Morning" and "Woodstock," along with the seminal 1971 album "Blue," the Canadian artist clearly established herself as a creative force on the American music scene.

Since then, Mitchell has continued experimenting with various genres and creative expression, inspiring a new generation of artists, including Sarasota-based indie rock band Elysian Sex Drive.

"She's a visionary and one of those consummate artists," said ESD lead singer DeLaran. "She was a master of her craft and could take very poetic words and make them accessible."

More than a dozen eclectic music acts who share DeLaran's admiration for Mitchell will share the stage for a tribute concert, "You Turn Me On I'm a Radio," from 6 p.m. to midnight Nov. 1 at Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa.

Advance tickets for the show -- which features musicians performing rock, funk and folk interpretations of Mitchell's most revered tracks -- cost $12 ($15 the day of the show).

A fundraiser for Tampa-based radio station WMNF (88.5-FM), the event features 12-minute sets from Denise Moore and Then Some, Some Dancing Skeleton, Natty Moss Bond and Steve Peake, Bob Anthony and Bryce Johnson, Lara Cerri and Dan DeGregory, Bunko Squad, Ed Woltil and Friends, Pam Rubenstein, Lorna Bracewell, Juniper, Elysian Sex Drive, Blue Dice, Sandy Atkinson Band and Rebekah Pulley and the Reluctant Prophets.

Elysian Sex Drive will be performing "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Woodstock," DeLaran said.

"I think we're going to go in a funk and electronic direction for 'Woodstock,' but we're still working on 'Big Yellow Taxi,' " she said. "I'm really excited to hear how the other bands interpret Joni."
