Legendary Album Covers from the Eagles, the Doors, Joni Mitchell and Others Re-Imagined on Socially and Environmentally Responsible Domtar EarthChoice Papers

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 25, 2005--Renowned album cover artist Gary Burden of Malibu-based R. Twerk & Co. and Gary Gonzales from Inglewood, Calif.-based "green" printer Insync Media have made the era of peace, love and rock 'n' roll come alive on environmentally and socially responsible Domtar EarthChoice papers.

Burden has re-imagined 14 of his best-known album covers - including The Eagles' "Desperado", "On The Border" and "One of These Nights"; The Doors' "Morrison Hotel"; Joni Mitchell's "Blue"; Crosby, Stills and Nash's self-titled first album; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's "Deja Vu"; and Steppenwolf's "Steppenwolf the Second" - to demonstrate the quality that can now be achieved with socially and environmentally responsible papers and printing processes.

One-of-a-kind, digitally printed, 47-inch by 47-inch wall posters will be unveiled tonight for an invitation-only crowd at the historic Whisky A Go-Go nightclub on Hollywood's Sunset Strip. Each wall poster is accompanied by introductions Burden wrote, with quotes from the artists themselves, to tell the histories and insider stories of the album covers. The exhibit will travel to Chicago, Dallas, New York and Toronto later this year.

"The times have changed, but the social and environmental ethics we advocated in the '60s and '70s are more relevant than ever," Burden said. "I was first drawn to Domtar and Insync Media when I created Neil Young's 'Greendale' book and was impressed by their commitments to environmental sustainability. FSC-certified Domtar EarthChoice papers embody the spirit of classic rock 'n' roll."

In addition to the wall posters, Burden has created a 32-page companion brochure that will showcase the 14 album covers on different color and texture Domtar EarthChoice image papers. Through combinations of paper, ink and finishing techniques, the brochure will simulate the original album covers - and in some cases achieve new looks that were not possible when the originals were produced.

"Designer Gary Burden and printer Gary Gonzales pulled out all the stops and pushed the boundaries of environmentally responsible printing with these pieces. They used just about every color, texture, finish and ink they could throw at these papers," noted Steve Barker, Domtar's senior vice president for pulp and paper sales and marketing. "The results are a vivid demonstration of just how far socially and environmentally responsible papers have come and how far an inspired vision can make them go."

"The entertainment industry has a history of leading the charge for social change," said Insync Media's Gonzales, "More and more social responsibility-minded corporations are following suit and seriously considering how their businesses impact the environment. A lot of companies have doubts about the quality of socially and environmentally responsible papers and inks. This project should prove to the skeptics that they have nothing to worry about."

Domtar EarthChoice is the most comprehensive line of socially and environmentally responsible paper products on the market today. In development for more than three years, it was launched last month to overcome corporate end-users' most-common concerns about the quality, selection, availability and price of environmentally-friendly papers.

"In the past, companies had few options if they wanted to use environmentally responsible papers," Domtar's Barker commented. "The papers that were available to them often commanded premium prices and they came in limited colors, textures, sizes and weights. Because Domtar EarthChoice papers contain virgin fiber that comes from responsibly-managed forests, we can offer companies greater selection for all of their print pieces at competitive prices."

Domtar EarthChoice papers are primarily intended for business applications including corporate identity packages, brochures and promotional materials, annual reports, business forms, training manuals, direct mail, newsletters, catalogs, magazines, book covers, invitations, presentation folders, calendars, envelopes, labels and business cards. Domtar has also committed to extend the line with additional products for other business applications, notably office printing and copying.

Each Domtar EarthChoice paper contains virgin fiber that is certified by SmartWood to the Forest Stewardship Council's rigorous forest management standards. Most of the Domtar EarthChoice papers also contain post-consumer waste content.

The Rainforest Alliance has endorsed the papers in the Domtar EarthChoice line. Other environmental organizations, including World Wildlife Fund-Canada and ForestEthics, have also welcomed the family of papers.

The Rainforest Alliance works to protect ecosystems and the people and wildlife that depend on them by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Companies, cooperatives and landowners that participate in its programs meet rigorous standards that conserve biodiversity and provide sustainable livelihoods. In more than 50 countries around the world, the Rainforest Alliance is helping businesses, governments and communities change their land-use practices and set standards for the long-term use of resources and the conservation of the planet's great wealth of biodiversity. The Rainforest Alliance's SmartWood program was founded in 1989 to certify responsible forestry practices and to date has certified more than 40 million acres worldwide.
