Mitchell co-chair Print-ready version

Saskatoon StarPhoenix

Joni Mitchell, whose art may grace a new wing at the Mendel Art Gallery, will lend her name to the gallery’s capital campaign. Mitchell and Eva Mendel Miller, daughter of gallery founder Fred Mendel, have agreed to be the honorary co-chairs of the Mendel´s ambitious capital fundraising project. Miller, also an artist, is the gallery’s longest –standing benefactor, said director Terry Graff in a news release. He described her as a philanthropist and arts advocate who assisted her father in opening the gallery. Mitchell will also be the focus of a cultural centre in south downtown. The famous musician and artist who grew up in Saskatoon was recently in the city, and wondered in an exclusive StarPhoenix interview if “the town would warrant that much Joni Mitchell.” However, she said she was honoured by both suggestions, and that two venues could work if the emphasis on each was clearly drawn. Mitchell´s art was displayed at the Mendel in 2000, and became a huge attraction to local, national and international visitors. The Mendel is in the process of raising $13.15 million to expand and renovate its premises on the riverbank.
