Joni Mitchell Targets Sundance To Debut Documentary Print-ready version

Joni Mitchell decided to do things differently for her 20th album 'Travelogue'. For starters, she had the cameras turned on to capture the creative process of the record and the result is a one hour documentary she hopes to unveil next year at the Sundance Film Festival.

The entire project was different for Joni. This time she used an orchestra, she recorded in London and she also included songs spanning her entire career. She brought in acclaimed filmmakers Allison Anders and Alistair Donald to capture the project on film. Anders made the movie Grace Of My Heart, Donald produced Paul McCartney's Wingspan documentary. Joni was outspoken during the filming with the rarely heard folk rock superstar giving long time fans a uncommon behind the scenes evaluation of her work.

Having the camera's rolling also lets us see how close the album came to going up in smoke. A fire broke out in the studio and almost destroyed the master tapes.

'Travelogue' was recorded in London at George Martin's Air Studios with a 70 piece orchestra. Joni took the opportunity to redo some of her classic tunes spanning her entire career.

Included are "The Dawntreader" from Song To A Seagull, "Woodstock" and "The Circle Game," from 1970's Ladies Of The Canyon; "The Last Time I Saw Richard" from 1971's Blue; "For The Roses" and "Judgement Of The Moon And Stars (Ludwig's Tune)" from 1972's For The Roses and "Trouble Child" and "Just Like This Train" from 1974's Court And Spark.

Also featured are "Amelia," "Hejira" and "Refuge Of The Roads" from 1976's Hejira; "Otis And Marlena" from 1977's Don Juan's Reckless Daughter and "God Must Be A Boogie Man" from1979's Mingus. Culled from Mitchell's 1982 album Wild Things Run Fast are "Love," "You Dream Flat Tires," "Be Cool" and "Chinese Café /Unchained Melody," while more recent material includes "Slouching Toward Bethlehem" (based on a poem by W.B. Yeats) and "Cherokee Louise" from 1991's Night Ride Home along with three tracks from 1992's Turbulent Indigo: "The Sire Of Sorrows" (Job's Sad Song), "Sex Kills" and "Borderline."
