A Celebration of Joni Mitchell featuring Kimberly Ford is a rocking tribute to the most iconic singer-songwriter of the Woodstock generation. Mitchell touched millions with her nearly 40-year career that spanned genres from contemporary folk to jazz to full-throated pop-rock. This incredible seven-piece band, modeled on Joni’s tenure with Tom Scott & the L.A. Express, plays all your favorite tunes, like Help Me, Both Sides Now, Conversation, Blue, River, All I Want, Free Man in Paris, Carey and, of course, Woodstock. The band also throws in a few you might not have heard before ...

COJM has been packing houses throughout Southern and Northern California and the Southwest since 2014. Significant performances include the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, Yoshi’s Oakland, Olivas Adobe in Ventura, Palms Playhouse in Winters and Grand Annex in San Pedro. In 2020, the band mounts its first East Coast tour with a stop at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Die-hard fans can’t get enough (and often sing along) and critics have noticed. “No singer on the West Coast is paying more scrupulous attention to Mitchell’s wondrous book than Santa Barbara’s Kimberly Ford,” writes Bay Area journalist Andy Gilbert, noting her “bright and flexible soprano that effortlessly rises into Mitchell’s upper range.”

Ford and her band bring a new verve to all of Joni’s favored genres. Not content to be a paint-by-numbers tribute band, COJM infuses Mitchell’s songs with new life while paying deep respect to a revered icon and poet laureate of her generation’s songwriters.

Joni’s absence from performing has only whetted appetites for COJM since the band’s birth six years ago. Founding drummer Charles Levin approached Ford with the idea after hearing her sing on gig at a private party. Two weeks later, he emailed Ford to see if she was game for a Joni-centric band. The answer was a resounding yes! In short time, Ford and Levin assembled a crew of the area’s best-known musicians to take on the project. More information here

Bankable musical productions do not materialize out of thin air, and require years of tweaks and adjustments. Just ask U2, Phil Collins, and Paul Simon, who all flubbed miserably with Broadway song-and-dance showcases they created.

I Think I’m Fallin’: The Songs of Joni Mitchell was a step ahead of its competitors, in that regard. When it arrived in 2016, it drew audiences and applause, thanks to the wide expanse of Mitchell’s catalogue. With actors playing characters borne from the songs, the tribute — created in Victoria specifically for The Belfry by composer Tobin Stokes and director Michael Shamata — eschews convention by using only Mitchell’s music and lyrics in which to tell the story. It's called JONI, the new album and project by Rossana Casale, a 'jazz' homage to the great American singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, considered the great mother of American songwriting.

Casale says: “She was my first guide, my very first listening along with my father's jazz albums. I would lock myself in the living room and put on her albums, especially 'Blue' and let myself be carried away by the words of her incredible lyrics. With 'Woodstock' played only on the black keys of the piano, at sixteen I successfully passed the singing admission to the Conservatory in Milan. From her, for the entire first part of my career, I drew inspiration for my harmonic choices in composition and in the songs other musicians wrote for me, to which I added those lyrics, that wanted to comunicate my stories but without ever being too direct. In this album I respected her writing in the development of each song and then gave jazz the role of flight, of the painter who sweeps with the colors, inspired by Joni's words". With Rossana Casale, on the album and on tour, her now historic band: Emiliano Begni (piano), Francesco Consaga (Soprano Sax and Transverse Flute), Ermanno Dodaro (double bass), Gino Cardamone (jazz guitar). Produced by Rossana Casale for Egea Music

Rossana Casale, born in 1959, is an artist and singer-songwriter on the Italian music scene with more than 17 albums released to date. More information here

‘Hejira’ is a 7-piece band set up to celebrate and honour the masterpiece works of Joni Mitchell, mostly from the late ‘70s. Having released the albums ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns’, ‘Hejira’, ‘Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter’ and ‘Mingus’ (regarded as her ‘jazz period’), Joni then toured briefly with a band formed from the crème de la crème of contemporaneous jazz musicians (Metheny, Mays, Brecker, Pastorius and Alias). The tour was recorded, producing the outstanding live album, ‘Shadows And Light’; it is from this album that the band Hejira is drawing the body of its repertoire. Comprising highly experienced jazz musicians, this band is fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has - in her own way - assimilated the poise, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms. Expect an evening of the ‘great’ songs from Mitchell’s back catalogue! More information here

Joni Mitchell has never played Caffè Lena, but, in so many ways, she represents the values that have driven America’s longest-running coffeehouse since its opening night in May, 1960. Both have strong ties to the folk tradition, a fierce independence, a close connection with humanity and a relentless musical vision of what the future can be.

Produced and hosted by Capital Region Thomas Edison Music Awards Hall of Fame inductee Michael Eck, this special evening‚ a benefit for Caffè Lena, features performances of Mitchell classics from all phases of the artist’s career. The stellar lineup includes fellow Hall of Famer Sara Ayers; multiple Eddie Award-winner Buggy Jive; Eddie nominee Kate McDonnell; the dynamic Kate McKrell; reclusive regional favorite Rosanne Raneri; and rising star Angelina Valente.

“When Mitchell appeared at last year’s Newport Folk Festival with Brandi Carlile,” Eck says, “it affirmed once again just how important a force she is in the music world – endlessly inventive melodically, endlessly searching lyrically and endlessly inspiring in every way.”

“Joni has re-emerged to stir idealism and hope, which is exactly the spirit Caffè Lena wants to foster,” says Executive Director Sarah Craig. “This slate of top-tier regional talent, including some rarely seen artists, proves how much pull Joni has on both musicians and fans these days."

Come celebrate Mitchell’s pioneering spirit and indelible mark on the landscape of American art and culture, with a special musical tribute to Joni Mitchell, on the cusp of her 80th birthday.
