I attended this concert when I was 16. An older sister of a high school friend invited us to tag along. I wasn't yet familiar with Joni. Only the album Song For A Seagull had been released at that point and she wasn't getting much radio play yet except on the coasts. Salt Lake was a stopover between Denver and San Francisco for band tours so I'd already seen more great concerts than you might expect. Jefferson Airplane, Canned Heat, Buffalo Springfield, John Mayall. But I'd never seen a woman performing her own songs alone on stage with just a piano and guitar. The University Ballroom was wide and shallow with poor sight lines and it didn't have great acoustics. But I knew I was seeing something special. It's the only time I saw her live but her music has continued to break through barriers for me ever since.
