Wednesday's Weather Song - Urge for Going Print-ready version

If you were asked to name a weather-related song by Joni Mitchell, "Both Sides, Now" would probably spring to mind first.

Doyle even mentioned "Both Sides, Now" in a post about cirrus clouds. But I've got a different song, "Urge for Going," in mind for this week's "Wednesday weather song."

To be perfectly honest, before researching the tune today, I really didn't know that Joni Mitchell was the songwriter. The version I'm most familiar with is by Tony Rice on his 1988 Native American album. It's a song about fall -- the transition from summer to winter, about death and lost love, and a great example of Mitchell's strong songwriting. When I heard it in college (the Tony Rice version), I was captivated by the line, "All that stays is dying and all that lives is gettin' out." I also added to my burgeoning vocabulary, learning that a chevron is anything v-shaped, such as geese in migrational flight.

It turns out that Joni originally wrote the tune in 1966. While the song became a hit for country singer George Hamilton IV and for folk singer Tom Rush, it wasn't released on a Joni Mitchell album until the 1996 Hits album.

So what do you think of this tune? It's been covered by others, but as I mention, I've only heard the Tony Rice version. I've not heard the other covers or even the original for that matter.
