On August 16, 1988, the nation's Sioux Indians marched to Mt. Rushmore where they held a rally seeking to recover unoccupied federally held lands in the Black Hills that were, according to the Sioux, illegally confiscated from them by the U.S. government back in 1877.
The Lakota Sioux had invited Joni and Iron Eyes Cody (heard chanting), to march with them and speak as part of the program. Joni brought along four Super 8mm cameras and filmed while on the reservation. Directed and produced by Joni, she and Larry Klein are credited for the camera work as well as the additional footage shot by the Lakota Sioux children, ages 4 through 14, who also appear in the video.
