According to David Sapp, in this novel set in mid-80s Manhattan, Fiona, one of the lead characters, is an avid fan of Joni and Leonard Cohen. Joni is mentioned several times in this book, and the following bit of dialogue from Fiona is one example: "You don't wear an earring do you? Nothing more beautiful on a man. Remember that Joni Mitchell song, And you stood out like a ruby in a black man's ear? Joni Mitchell is so underrated. She and Leonard Cohen. Mick Fucking Jagger is still on MTV, but Joni -- no!"
