Hairs Johnny!
"Tonight Show" host Johnny Carson surprised his fans Wednesday by returning from a one-week vacation with a full face of whiskers. Carson told his studio audience he didn't shave during his break because he was "resting the face." But later, he admitted the razor would stop resting later this week and the salt-and-pepper stubble would come off.
Hoax doesn't frighten Phil into taping
IT'LL TAKE more than a few choreographed fainters to make Phil Donahue put his show on tape. Many insiders felt that a Jan. 21 hoax -- during which seven audience members pretended to faint in a statement to, of all things, support live TV -- might convince the producers to put the show on tape. "We've been live for 17 years and we have no plans to change that now," spokeswoman Penny Rotheiser said. She added, however, that the show would "tighten up our security on ticket distribution."
THE CANADIAN musical community is getting into the Ethiopian aid act now. More than 35 Canadian artists -- including Bryan Adams, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, Anne Murray, Joni Mitchell, Corey Hart, Burton Cummings and members of Loverboy and Rush -- will convene Monday in Toronto to record "Northern Lights," which was penned by Adams and songwriting partner Jim Vallance. David Foster, who is nominated for six Grammy Awards, will produce the fund-raising session.
MELODEE DUBOIS, currently vice-president and managing director of the Detroit Grand Opera Association, which sponsors the Metropolitan Opera's annual Detroit visit, is switching opera companies. On July 1, Dubois will become vice-president of administration for Michigan Opera Theatre, overseeing development, public relations, marketing and volunteer activities.
BROOKE SHIELDS couldn't be just another Princeton University sophomore for too long, could she? Starting next week, the actress-scholar will teach two non-credit classes in aerobic dance for up to 70 students, faculty and alumni. The classes will be held on the Ivy League school's campus, but officials wouldn't elaborate where because "we might be creating a security problem."
"SORRY, MOM" was the first thing porn star Marilyn Chambers said after being arrested last week in San Francisco. Chambers, 32, was charged with soliciting prostitution and engaging in lewd conduct in a public place, both misdemeanors, during a performance in which she reportedly allowed her fans to touch her nude body. But her lawyer, Tom Steel accused city authorities of using Chambers' arrest to help turn the city council vote against a proposed ordinance. The proposal? Eliminating police permit requirements for adult bookstores and theaters. "We think this was more a political move than a legal move," he said.
A ONE-NIGHT STAND was all model Jerry Hall said she wanted out of Rolling Stones' leader Mick Jagger. Now she lives with the singer and has had one of his three children. But in her book, "Jerry Hall's Tall Tales," due out in June, she shows she knows how to keep her mate in line. When Hustler magazine offered her $1 million to pose nude, "Mick was terrified I was going to say 'yes,' " she writes.
HOW POPULAR is Perrier? The champagne of the Yuppies has made such a big splash that the French company has developed its first new product in 123 years -- low-calorie orange, lemon and lime mineral water to debut April 15.
