A "sneak peek" of a film that documents a new ballet co-created by Canadian songstress Joni Mitchell will kick off the 2007 Woodstock Film Festival, set for Oct. 10-14.
"Fiddle and the Drum," which takes its title from a Mitchell song, will be shown at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock.
This preview runs 55 minutes and features Mitchell's collaboration with internationally acclaimed choreographer Jean Grand-MaƮtre of the Alberta Ballet Company. The narrative ballet was performed to 49 minutes of Mitchell's music.
The set was designed by Mitchell and includes the first release of her newest artwork, which is projected on a large screen during the ballet. In addition to being an anchor of the 1960s folk music scene, Mitchell has long been a prolific painter.
Songs in the film span Mitchell's catalog of albums, from "For the Roses" to "Night Ride Home" and "Turbulent Indigo." The ballet also includes three new songs from Mitchell's new album, "Shine."
"The Fiddle and The Drum" was filmed at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and will be broadcast on the BRAVO! Network in October.
