REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN--(CCNMatthews - April 20, 2005) - The remarkable singer-songwriter-artist Joni Mitchell will attend the Lieutenant Governor's Centennial Gala on May 19, 2005 in Saskatoon.

"The incomparable Ms. Mitchell is one of the most important musical trailblazers in contemporary music and the visual arts," said the Honourable Dr. Lynda Haverstock, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. "Her talents are immeasurable, which is why she is so deeply admired by other artists. We are delighted that she is coming home to join with her family and admirers to honour our province's Centennial."

The Lieutenant Governor's Centennial Gala will feature Saskatchewan's most celebrated entertainers, artists and celebrities. It will also feature a once-in-a-lifetime tribute to Joni Mitchell in her home town. There will be some special guest appearances and a few spectacular surprises -- all with a distinctly Saskatchewan flavour.

Raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the world-renowned singer, songwriter, visual artist, and poet continues to look to the province of Saskatchewan as a source of inspiration in her music, her art and her poetry. Her upcoming album Songs of a Prairie Girl is set for release on April 26 to coincide with the Saskatchewan Centennial celebrations.

"This collection of songs and photographs is my contribution to Saskatchewan's Centennial celebrations. I recommend that you get yourself a hot beverage and stand by the heater as you listen to these musical tales of long, cold winters with a hint of short but glorious summers," Ms. Mitchell said in a release.

Considered as one the most influential musicians in the last 40 years, Joni Mitchell's music has been recorded by artists from every genre, including: Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Tori Amos, Prince, The Byrds, Crosby, Stills and Nash, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Bing Crosby and more. In 1981, Ms. Mitchell was inducted into the Juno Hall of Fame and in 1997 she became the first Canadian woman named to the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The legendary performer and songwriter received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002 - the first Canadian to earn this recognition. (Full biography attached).
