The two-disc set Joni Mitchell: Collectors Edition (Eagle) combines a retrospective look at a fabulous composer and performer with performances culled from a 1998 concert. The first disc is the biographical one, and it covers every phase of Mitchell’s writing and singing legacy, including the period with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and the then controversial collaboration with jazz giant Charles Mingus. The various video segments include duets with Graham Nash on “Our House” and “Get Together,” and Bob Dylan on “Positively 4th Street,” plus shots of Mitchell doing “Ladies of the Canyon,” “Both Sides Now,” “Hejira,” and several others. Disc number two reprises the concert, which was mostly effective, though the rendition of “Why Do Fools Fall In Love?” isn’t exactly her best moment. But the willingness to do it, as well as an equally uneven “Trouble Man,” are illustrative of someone completely at peace with herself creatively and unconcerned with failure. Those rough spots are more than balanced by triumphant versions of “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Black Crow,” “Sex Kills,” and “Dream Land” among others. The package also has out-takes, bonus cuts, a photo gallery, discography and travelogue.
