Oscar-winning director Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous) has revealed his Joni Mitchell biopic, which has been in the works for several years, is on track to be released sooner than expected.

"I'm super excited. We're going to start in by the end of this year and hopefully have it done for Christmas next year," the director told Classic Rock.

Crowe promised to honour the musician's life "through her prism" stating, "It's Joni's life, not through anybody else's prism. It's through her prism. It's the characters who impacted her life that you know and a lot that you don't know. And the music is so cinematic."

Casting is yet to be revealed but is highly anticipated with rumours of Meryl Streep playing an older Joni in the biopic.

The update follows the Joni Jam concert which took place on October 19 in The Hollywood Bowl Los Angeles. The show featured a star studded line-up including Elton John, Chappell Roan, Lucy Dacus, Meryl Streep and Brandy Carlile all joining the iconic musician onstage to perform alongside her.
