Joni Mitchell will support her new album of standards and re-interpretations of her old material, Both Sides Now, with an 11-date nationwide tour. In order to recreate the album's lush orchestrations, Mitchell will perform with local symphony orchestras. It's something of a departure for the folk singer who in the past has regaled her audiences with just a piano or guitar and her extraordinary voice.

The tour begins at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre on May 12 and wraps up on June 2 in Philadelphia at the E-Center. When Mitchell comes to New York, she is scheduled to perform two dates at the Madison Square Garden Theatre. The possibility exists of more dates being added.

Mitchell herself has described Both Sides Now, which includes cover versions of songs like "At last" and her own "A Case of You," as "A history of North American romantic love in the twentieth century." During the recording sessions, Mitchell performed with a full 71-piece orchestra and a big band ensemble. According to www.jonimitchell.com, many of the older musicians teared up upon hearing the playbacks.

In its review of the Both Sides Now album, VH1.com said, "Mitchell croons with the style and aplomb of a cabaret vet, her voice capable of lovely phrasing, redolent with feeling, and dusted with a classy, delicate grit. [Her] arrangements - accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra - swell with charged emotion." Both Sides Now is out today (March 21), having been released on February 14 as a limited edition packaged with reproductions of Mitchell's paintings.

Mitchell is also gearing up for an all-star tribute to her life and work, which has included hits like "Woodstock," "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio" and "Big Yellow Taxi." Stars expected to perform at TNT's An All Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell on April 6 include Elton John, James Taylor, Shawn Colvin, Wynonna, Cassandra Wilson, Diana Krall and k d lang. The show will be hosted by Ashley Judd.

Mitchell's publicist also said that a planned tribute album is attracting the interest of artists like Elvis Costello and Bjork. Mitchell herself intends to record a Christmas album this year, including some self-penned carols.
