Joni Mitchell will contribute guest vocals on the upcoming album by drummer Brian Blade, Perceptual, which is due for release on Blue Note Records in April 2000.
Mitchell sings on the track "Steadfast" for Blade, with whom she's toured and recorded extensively. The collaboration marks the third time in recent years that Mitchell has sung on albums by jazz artists, after guesting on albums by Herbie Hancock and Kyle Eastwood.
Blade, whose earlier career was typified by drumming gigs with young jazz stars like Joshua Redman, Kenny Garrett, and Brad Mehldau, has more recently been heard backing such pop and rock artists as Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Victoria Williams, and Emmylou Harris. Blade has just returned to his New York area home after touring with Seal.
Blade was prominently featured on Mitchell's 1998 album Taming The Tiger. His 1998 debut album, Brian Blade Fellowship, was produced by the pop-oriented Daniel Lanois.
On Perceptual, Blade is again backed by his band Fellowship (pianist John Cowherd; saxophonists Myron Walden and Melvin Butler; pedal steel guitarist Dave Easley; and bassist Chris Thomas) with the new addition of guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel.
