"But that's fine, because Liberal Democrats are outsiders...we speak for the outsiders, for the governed not the governors, the voiceless and the voteless". The season's pier attractions are advertised on the waterfront.

The speech is a change of emphasis for Mr Farron, who refused to take a ministerial job in the coalition government and scored it just "two out of 10" ahead of the general election.

Rafael Behr from the Guardian was quick to remind Lib Dems how far they had to go after a disastrous election saw their MPs reduced from 57 to 8.

In his speech in Bournemouth he said his party should be "serious about power" and claimed the election of Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader had left the Lib Dems as the only credible opposition to the Tories. Our keyboard player rang me up a couple of weeks ago - he said, "Tim - we should reform, enter X Factor next year". "On Europe, a powerful case for that; on refugees, a powerful case for that, and right on the forefront, a powerful case for more social housing so people can enjoy the security which having their own home necessarily brings".

He said the Government policy would not directly help hundreds of thousands of refugees now on the move across Europe, calling for an worldwide solution to the crisis.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron has spoken about his upbringing in Preston at the party's conference.

"The only good thing I can say is that because the photos are pre-digital they are so low resolution that you can't make out the eyeliner".

Describing housing as the "biggest single issue" that politicians don't talk about, Farron said the Liberal Democrats are going to be talking about, campaigning on it and going on about it, to "make a difference to the millions who have been ignored".

Referring to the arrival of refugees before the Second World War and the country opening its doors to Ugandan Asians, Mr Farron said: "I realise how much richer - culturally, socially, economically - our society is today, because of our generosity then". Nothing noble about defeat - losing sucks, losing robs you of your change to make people's lives better.

Mr Farron accused Labour of "peddling fantasy economics", and said it seemed to have "left the playing field" under its new leader.

She has insisted that Mr Farron is the "right choice" and is capable of rebuilding the party. Wonder what's made him change his tune.

Mr Farron told party activists "our mission is to put Liberal Democrats back in power at every level throughout Britain" next year.

Mr Farron will condemn the Government for being "unambitious" in postponing railway electrification in the north and suggest high speed broadband roll out is happening too slowly.

Speaking to activists in Bournemouth, Mr Farron will add: "We will learn from the last five years but we will not repudiate the last five years".

"You know, there are those that would like me to take this opportunity to distance myself from the past five years, to say it was all some awful mistake, to say I disagree with [former party leader Nick Clegg]".

The father-of-three said: "I might be biased, but it's a blessed place to live, to raise a family, to run up the fells". NYSE Post
