In the winter of 2007, celebrated singer-songwriter and Saskatchewan native Joni Mitchell and Alberta Ballet Artistic Director Jean Grand-Maître joined forces to create an exhilarating and emotional production blending Mitchell's music and art with Grand-Maître's choreography. Their resulting collaboration yielded a ballet exploring the human spirit's potential to create and destroy, its ability to love and hate, its capacity for war and peace.

Joni Mitchell's The Fiddle and The Drum is a unique tableau of dance, music and art, voicing Mitchell's long held convictions that the earth is in peril. Over 40 pieces of Joni's art are projected onto the stage during the ballet, creating a dramatic backdrop for the dancers. It's going to have some elements that are unusual in ballet - like an encore to Big Yellow Taxi. It's kind of an interesting hybrid between a rock concert and a ballet, said Joni Mitchell.

Since its world premiere in Alberta, Joni Mitchell's The Fiddle and The Drum has enjoyed a sold-out theatre screening in New York City and a national television broadcast. This season, the full-length adaptation of Joni Mitchell's The Fiddle and The Drum, which includes four new songs and imagery, will come to Regina and Saskatoon in January, 2009. Performances of Joni Mitchell's The Fiddle and The Drum will be held at the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina on January 20 and 21, 2009, and at TCU Place in Saskatoon on January 23 and 24, 2009.
