Travelogue

On this very orchestral double album, it's as if Joni Mitchell turned to the late Leonard Bernstein for her arrangements.

That's meant as a compliment: This album is very pretty and very sophisticated.

The hallmark of "Travelogue" is muted horns, brushed drums and Mitchell warbling with a hint of hipster bop, as she does so nicely on "God Must Be a Boogie Man."

This is something she can be very proud of, though it's strange for a songwriter of her caliber to reinterpret old material to make a symphonic greatest-hits collection, rather than working at something new.
