In a world full of turmoil and uncertainty, what better way to unite the generations than the timeless, classic catalog of Joni Mitchell? The heart of this concert will be Joni’s classic Blue album. Expect to hear hits such as “River,” “A Case of You,” and “California.” For the super fans, cuts from her Clouds, Ladies of the Canyon, and Song to a Seagull albums are sure to delight. Joni Mitchell was a pioneer of the Laurel Canyon music scene which impacted the soundscape of folk music to this day. This evening will showcase her earnest, vulnerable style and her storytelling capacity, with a cast of vocalists who are unique in their own right, celebrating the diversity of voice types in the Broadway community.

Often referred to as the greatest contemporary songwriter, Joni has been a huge influence in our lives and music over the years.

Joni’s career has spanned over half a century, and in that time, she explored and experimented in many genres of music and made them her own. These artists have selected some of our favorite Joni songs and aspire to honor the original and explore their individual artistry through her songs. Additionally, they will play some of their own tunes that were directly inspired by Joni Mitchell.

‘Hejira’ is a 7-piece band set up to celebrate and honour the masterpiece works of Joni Mitchell, mostly from the late ‘70s. Having released the albums ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns’, ‘Hejira’, ‘Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter’ and ‘Mingus’ (regarded as her ‘jazz period’), Joni then toured briefly with a band formed from the crème de la crème of contemporaneous jazz musicians (Metheny, Mays, Brecker, Pastorius and Alias). The tour was recorded, producing the outstanding live album, ‘Shadows And Light’; it is from this album that the band Hejira is drawing the body of its repertoire. Comprising highly experienced jazz musicians, this band is fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has in her own way - assimilated the poise, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms. Joni Mitchell is the epitome of the singer/songwriter. From innocent hippie ballads to recent prophetic social commentary, her lyrics are poetry set to emotionally complex harmonizations. From folk to jazz her compositions are examples of modern-day art songs.

Joni's Soul began as a collaboration between highly respected ‘from-the-heart’ singer Gina Foster and world-class guitarist Ronnie Johnson, attracting some of the UK's finest players with a shared love for the musician they consider the greatest singer/songwriter of the last half century.

Coyote, Hejira, Edith and the Kingpin, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, A Case of You, Trouble Child, Help Me and Gina Foster’s gorgeous version of Both Sides Now – it’s through songs like these that the band explore the unique song writing and gift of performance Joni Mitchell revealed in her iconic albums Blue, Court and Spark, Hejira, The Hissing of Summer Lawns and beyond.
