We will be playing selections from Ladies of the Canyon, Blue, For the Roses, Court and Spark and The Hissing of Summer Lawns.

One of several concerts at Celtic Connections 2016 reflecting the currently hot-button topic of migration – a human phenomenon as old as the race, and indispensible to our cultural evolution – Pilgrimer reimagines Joni Mitchell’s classic 1976 album Hejira, whose Arabic title denotes both the prophet Muhammad’s flight from Mecca to Medina in 622, to escape persecution, and any flight from danger or hostility. Largely written while driving home solo from Maine to LA, Hejira meditates profoundly on what one track calls ‘The Refuge of the Road’, with its flipsides of freedom and loneliness.

Pilgrimer, by the novelist, poet and Scots language champion James Robertson – who’s long drawn inspiration from Mitchell’s canon – audaciously adapts the album into both Scots and a Scottish setting. It’s premièred here by a stellar cast including Dick Gaughan, Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis and Annie Grace, plus Grammy-winning US guitarist Larry Carlton, who played on Hejira itself, and rising-star bassist Felix Pastorius, whose dad Jaco did.

JONI'S SOUL was formed with an all-star line-up in Summer 2014 to celebrate the brilliant and prolific work of Joni Mitchell. Given that contemporary interest in her music and personal history has never been so strong since her 2001 musical retirement, and the fact she's made it clear there'll be no future live performances, interest and expectation for this show is immense.

The five piece band, led by the beautiful from-the-heart vocals of Gina Foster (Eric Clapton, Sinead O’Connor) and guitarist Ronnie Johnson (Van Morrison, Bob Dylan), draw on their own emotional response to these songs to look beyond merely the faithful reproduction of the Joni Mitchell songbook and shine a light on the most soulful aspects of her words and music.

Coyote, Hejira, Edith and the Kingpin, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, River, Trouble Child, Help Me and Gina Foster’s gorgeous version of Both Sides Now - it’s through songs like these that the band explore the unique songwriting, harmonic concept and gift of performance Joni Mitchell so enduringly revealed in her iconic albums Blue, Court and Spark, Hejira, The Hissing of Summer Lawns and beyond … More information here

Few artists can rightly be called "icons" of their time and genre. Joni Mitchell is undoubtedly one of them. Her innovative and original music is woven into the very fabric of 20th century American culture. Much more than an entertainer, Mitchell became a treasured voice for millions of fans around the world.

Issa Forrest and Sweet Bird capture the magic and unique sound that so many have come to love through the decades. The band faithfully renders many of Joni's songs, while lovingly reimagining others. This gifted group of musicians truly lives up to the challenge implied in the phrase, "tribute band." Not content to simply "cover" Mitchell's life work, the group delivers the essence of the music and delights audiences with cherished memories.

This show amounts to an evening of time travel through Mitchell's own musical journey from the light and frolicking "Chelsea Morning" to the grounded and contemplative sound of "Sweet Bird."

In 1971, Joni Mitchell released "Blue," a collection of songs Rolling Stone magazine would later rank No. 30 among its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

That year, Carole King's "Tapestry," No. 36 on Rolling Stone's list, also came out, eventually spending 15 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard chart and chalking up four Grammy Awards and more than 10 million U.S. sales.

And Carly Simon picked up the 1971 Best New Artist Grammy, before "You're So Vain" dropped in '72 and spawned one of rock and roll's great mysteries— who was she singing about? — on its way to ranking No. 82 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of All Time list.

All of that, and the fact that all three women came into occasionally overlapping orbits around James Taylor — Mitchell as a lover, King as a collaborator, Simon as a wife — is covered in sweeping detail in the 2009 tome, "Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon — and the Journey of a Generation."

Some of it is celebrated in "Girls Like Us," a cabaret-style show coming to Park Forest and the Freedom Hall Matinee Theatre series at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. More info here.

The album, which is Sutton’s first solo outing without her longtime Band, features Al Jarreau, Hubert Laws, Peter Erskine, Larry Goldings, Serge Merlaud, Kevin Axt and The Turtle Island Quartet. 54 BELOW, Broadway's Supper Club, presents Blake Pfeil in The BBC, 1970 on Saturday, July 25. On October 9, 1970, the BBC aired Joni Mitchell in Concert, an intimate and acoustic portrait that spotlighted several of her career-defining songs, including "Chelsea Morning," "Big Yellow Taxi," and "Both Sides Now."

In his 54 Below debut, up-and-coming singer/songwriter Blake Pfeil set up a challenge for himself: to pen and perform a new song as a mirrored response to each of the songs sung by Ms. Mitchell during the famed BBC broadcast. An eclectic walk between the realms of folk and pop, Mr. Pfeil's theatrically-charged melodic and poetic sensibilities weave a modern tapestry that examines humanity's continued search for joy.

The evening is co-conceived and directed by Ms. Sharone Halevy, in her subsequent 54 Below debut.

Few artists can rightly be called “icons” of their time and genre.

The band faithfully renders many of Joni’s songs, while lovingly reimagining others. This gifted group of musicians truly lives up to the challenge implied in the phrase, “tribute band.” Not content to simply “cover” Mitchell’s life work, the group delivers the essence of the music and delights audiences with cherished memories.

This show amounts to an evening of time travel through Mitchell’s own musical journey — from the light and frolicking “Chelsea Morning” to the grounded and contemplative sound of “Sweet Bird.”

JONI'S SOUL was formed with an all-star line-up in Summer 2014 to celebrate the brilliant and prolific work of Joni Mitchell. Given that contemporary interest in her music and history has never been so strong since her 2001 musical retirement, and the fact she's made it clear there'll be no future live performances, interest and expectation for these UK shows is immense.

Coyote, Hejira, Edith and the Kingpin, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, River, Trouble Child, Help Me and Gina Foster’s gorgeous version of Both Sides Now - it’s through songs like these that the band explore the unique songwriting, harmonic concept and gift of performance Joni Mitchell so enduringly revealed in her iconic albums Blue, Court and Spark, Hejira, The Hissing of Summer Lawns and beyond …

Debra Mann returns with her band to Sandywoods to pay tribute to the music of Joni Mitchell. Debra has performed throughout the northeast corner of the US for 3 decades, and was deeply influenced by the music of Joni Mitchell from her folk years through her exploration into jazz. Debra’s band features the mega talents of Dino Govoni (sax), Steve DeConti (guitar), Marty Ballou (bass), & Marty Richards (drums). Together they interpret the iconic music of Joni Mitchell through a jazz lens.

Kristen Graves will be opening the concert. Kristen is a singer/songwriter and humanitarian from Fairfield, CT, serving as the current Connecticut State Troubadour. Recently mentioned as ‘the new generation of folk’ by the New York Times, Kristen performs approximately 175 shows a year throughout the country. Returning to Sandywoods, Kristen will be performing to honor Joni Mitchell and support her friend, Debra Mann. She’ll be performing a combination of Joni pieces as well as her own. The audience will be invited to sing, laugh, cry, and enjoy each other as Kristen shares the stories behind her music - from sharing the Lincoln Center stage with Peter Yarrow, to sharing lentil soup and conversation with Pete Seeger - this is a wonderful way to start off a wonderful night!

The project has been praised for Antonioli’s original approach and instinctive sense of musicality, avoiding any direct duplication of Mitchell’s oeuvre. Instead, she has come up with her own inventive arrangements while staying true to the heart of Mitchell’s songs. AllAboutJazz writes: “It is not hyperbole to say that Laurie Antonioli is emerging as the most important vocalist, let alone jazz vocalist, this decade.”

Fearless Bay Area vocalist Laurie Antonioli has never shied away from plunging into jazz’s deepest pools. She’s raced through bebop steeplechases with cult saxophonist Pony Poindexter, collaborated with Bobby McFerrin during his formative San Francisco years, performed and collaborated with tenor sax legend Joe Henderson, and recorded a breathtaking duo album with pianist Richie Beirach, just for starters. With her latest project, Songs of Shadow, Songs of Light, Antonioli plumbs new emotional depths exploring her earliest musical inspiration, the vividly confessional songs of Joni Mitchell.

An internationally acclaimed jazz singer and influential educator, Antonioli doesn’t just interpret Mitchell’s music, she unveils unexpected emotional insights and uncovers submerged musical ideas while turning each song into her own revelatory tale. “Joni’s music is such a part of me, it’s like a second skin,” says Antonioli. “So is jazz, of course, but this goes even deeper. It’s where I started. You can hear how much she has influenced me now that I’ve come out with this recording.”

Mitchell’s songs have been so widely embraced by jazz singers in recent years that her music is ready for inclusion as the most contemporary chapter of the American Songbook. Part of what sets Songs of Shadow, Songs of Light apart is that Antonioli approaches Mitchell’s music as a jazz artist who leads a working band that, together, retains their group sound while also paying homage to a widely-known repertoire of music. This same band is also featured on her critically acclaimed 2010 album American Dreams (Intrinsic Music).

This concert will celebrate the release of Songs of Shadow, Songs of Light (Origin Records). The band on the recording is also the same band that will be on stage for a set of music featuring songs from the new CD. Joni Mitchell fans have attended the sold out “Joni” shows and have loved the new spin on familiar songs like “Woman of Heart and Mind,” “Both Sides Now,” and “River,” to name a few. The jazz musicians in the band are among the most revered in the Bay Area and are composers, bandleaders and first call sidemen. Together, the “American Dreams Band” is a cohesive, exciting and passionate collection of musicians – together creating a soundscape that enhances Ms. Antonioli’s interpretations of songs that defined a generation.

Coyote, Edith and the Kingpin, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, River, Trouble Child, Help Me and Gina Foster’s gorgeous version of Both Sides Now - it’s through songs like these that ‘Joni’s Soul’ explore the unique songwriting and gift of performance Joni Mitchell so enduringly revealed in her iconic albums Blue, Court and Spark, Hejira, The Hissing of Summer Lawns and beyond …

One of the UK Soul scene’s most respected ‘from-the-heart’ voices Gina Foster leads the way with special guest singer Manuela Panizzo (from Italy) adding her deftness and rich tonal palette and another Very Special Guest (we’re not allowed to name) delivering at least one of the classic Joni songs mentioned above. A real musical event.

After nine CDs over 20 years with her longstanding Tierney Sutton Band, the vocalist decided to leave her comfort zone and leap off the cliff by tackling an homage to the revered pop singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. With After Blue, her most daring and revealing project to date, Sutton puts her own unique stamp on familiar Mitchell tunes going back to 1969’s “Both Sides Now” and 1970’s “Big Yellow Taxi” and including more recent numbers like 1979’s “The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines” and 1982’s jivey “Be Cool,” along with Joni’s haunting take on the standard “Don’t Go to Strangers” from her 2000 orchestral album, Both Sides Now. A project she’s considered for a long time, Tierney says, “Thank you Joni Mitchell for your inspiration, your excellence. All I can hope for here is to scratch the surface of your deep legacy.” More info.

The highly influential singer-songwriter and versatile musician Joni Mitchell is best known for hit songs such as ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ and ‘Woodstock’ but there is far more to her work than this. Through the medium of original songs composed with lyricist Mike Jones and guitarist Alejandro Sancho, Sheffield based jazz singer Rosie Brown has taken her admiration for the song-writing, singing and playing of Joni Mitchell as the inspiration for this concert. In this ‘rich biographical body of work in song’ Rosie and her band explore the artist's career and complicated personal life, joys and trials, the love she walked away from to fulfill her artistic dreams, her life as a painter and the conflicts with fame of this all too human musical icon.

University of Sheffield alumnus Rosie Brown arrived at jazz when late nights in Techno clubs were rounded off with Nina Simone records. What really converted her though, was hearing Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. Amongst her other influences, Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker, Carmen Macrae, Sheila Jordan, Shirley Horn, Cassandra Wilson and Keith Jarrett stand out. Rosie was originally part of a notable renaissance in classic jazz singing, a movement which includes Tina May with whom she studied. Other teachers include Sheila Jordan and Scottish award winning tenor saxophonist Bobby Wellins, who accepted an invitation to tour with her in 2000.

Rosie’s debut album, ‘Preface’ was released to rave reviews in 1998, coinciding with a national tour sponsored by Jazz Services. In 2001, album number two, ‘Now’s the Time’, was also warmly welcomed by critics. Her third, ‘Miss Brown to You’, came out in May 2003 and the fourth recording ‘Bicycles and Dreams’ reflects her evolution in both vocal range and musical interests.

Women know about the power of girlfriends — but how about an entire posse of female empowerment? For the past decade, nearly a dozen NYC and NJ-based women have been part of an informal NYC-based musical girlfriend posse called the Chicks with Dip — singers and songwriters all, who convene regularly for afternoons filled with songs, wine, chips and dip, and lots of girl talk that ranges from the silly to the sexually explicit and from the emotionally raw to the political. The Chicks are Honor Finnegan, Meg Braun, Sharon Goldman, Victoria Lavington, Catherine Miles, Karyn Oliver, Elisa Peimer, Allison Scola, Anna Dagmar, Carolann Solebello, and Allison Tartalia. Over the years, they have laughed, cried, gossiped and performed together — and supported each other through 10 years of ups and downs: the birth of Carolann’s son; Meg’s marathon success; Allison S.’s wedding; Allison T.’s dating dilemmas; Elisa’s husband’s brain tumor; and Sharon’s divorce — not to mention moves, job changes, unemployment, band breakups and writer’s block. Their most serious struggle was when Victoria was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008.The gals swooped in to provide food, transportation, babysitting, and emotional support, as well as a fundraising performance in 2009 that raised over $5,000 towards Victoria’s treatment. “The idea for the Blue show sprang up organically up at a meeting in the summer of 2011,” says Carolann Solebello, longtime Chick and former member of female Americana trio Red Molly. “We were discussing Joni Mitchell and what her songwriting has meant to each of us, and since we’re always on the lookout for ways to collaborate, the 40th anniversary of Joni’s masterpiece seemed the perfect opportunity.”

Tickets for the special tribute concert – Joni Mitchell's Blue: A 40th Anniversary Celebration are $20 in advance and $23 at the door. Tickets are available online at www.meandthee.org and can be purchased in person in Marblehead at either the Spirit of ’76 Bookstore or the Arnould Gallery As at all me & thee coffeehouse events, refreshments are available, including homemade pastries, coffee, and teas. The me & thee has a handicapped-accessible entrance and an accessible bathroom, is a smoke-free environment, and is easily reached by MBTA bus. The me & thee is the oldest continually running acoustic coffeehouse in New England, and probably the country. The me & thee has been and will always be a volunteer, non-profit organization sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead. Garden Stage at UUCCN will present a special tribute concert - Joni Mitchell's Blue: A 40th Anniversary Celebration - on Sunday, Dec 2 at 3:00 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Central Nassau, 223 Stewart Avenue (corner of Nassau Boulevard), Garden City, NY. Tickets, $20 in advance/$22 at the door, may be purchased via email by writing calendar@uuccn.org or calling 516- 279-7606. This concert will feature a stellar cast of some of the New York City area's finest female singer/songwriters - plus Philadelphia percussionist Cheryl Prashker - in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Joni Mitchell's landmark album, Blue. The evening will include performances of ALL the songs from Blue plus original songs inspired by Joni Mitchell. Performers will include: Meg Braun, Anna dagmar, Honor Finnegan, Sharon Goldman, Victoria Lavington, Catherine Miles, Karyn Oliver, Elisa Peimer, Cheryl Prashker, Allison Scola, Carolann Solebello and Allison Tartalia.

These 12 women, known collectively as Chicks With Dip, represent a loose affiliation of female singer/songwriters in the New York City area who enjoy each other's company and the pleasures of good conversation, good songs, and good dip. The Chicks will celebrate their tenth anniversary this year.

"The idea for the Blue show sprang up organically at a meeting," says Carolann Solebello, longtime Chick and former member of female Americana trio Red Molly. "We were discussing Joni Mitchell and what her songwriting has meant to each of us, and since we're always on the lookout for ways to collaborate, the 40th anniversary of Joni's masterpiece seemed the perfect opportunity."

Lauren Fox is being heralded as one of the brightest stars on the New York cabaret scene, and Friday she will be at the Schorr Family Firehouse Stage in Johnson City when Goodwill Theatre presents “Love, Lust, Fear and Freedom: Songs of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen.”

A recent article in the New York Times singled out Fox as the “future of the cabaret world.” “Together, Lauren and her trio perform 16 songs — nine by Joni Mitchell and seven by Leonard Cohen — into a spellbinding his-and-hers dialogue that conjures the charged erotic climate of the hippie culture of the Woodstock era, when sex was infused with romantic mysticism. Her show is remarkable, deep and dramatically revealing.”

The affair of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen in the late 1960s may have only lasted a few months, but its resonance in the songs of these two Canadians, especially in Mitchell’s lyrics, is far-reaching. A speculative exploration of their personal and artistic chemistry is only one aspect of Fox’s remarkable cabaret show.

Through stories and song, Fox examines the creative genius and conflicted desires of two of folk music’s most enduring artists.

Fox delves into the meaning behind the songs, giving us a better understanding of a painter and a poet who mesmerized the world through song. Highlights of the show include Mitchell’s “Chelsea Morning,” “River” and “Both Sides Now” and Cohen’s “Suzanne,” “Bird on a Wire” and “Hallelujah.”

In the spring, Fox was named as the Female Debut Artist of the Year at the annual MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs) Awards and Debut Artist of the Year at the 27th Annual Bistro Awards, which celebrate outstanding achievement in cabaret and jazz. Film credits include Darren Aronofsky’s “Pi,” “Noon Blue Apples” (Sundance 2002 premiere), “Revolution Summer,” “Hamill” and “We Need to Talk About Kevin.”

Television credits include “New Amsterdam” and “Fringe.”

Tickets for the 7 p.m. show are $25 for adults and $22 for seniors and students and can be purchased at www.goodwilltheatre.net or by calling the theatre box office at (607) 772-2404, ext. 301. The Schorr Family Firehouse Stage is located at 46-48 Willow St. Doors open approximately one hour before show time. General seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Performances: June 21 - July 1, Thurs. - Sat at 7:30 p.m., Sun. at 2:30 p.m.

A theatrical exploration of the music of Joni Mitchell, iconic Canadian composer, painter, and storyteller whose work influenced and informed our culture from the 1970’s to the present day. Directed by Clint Thornton and Bryan Mercer, who created the successful performance events The Unexpected Showcase, The Letts Fest, and Into the Works: The Dynamics of Stephen Sondheim, this Performance Class exposes performers to the rich, expansive scope of Mitchell’s melodies, harmony and lyrics, while allowing participants to discover new depths of their own talent and cultural reference. Through this performance experience, artists will learn new techniques for conveying meaning through the musical line, as well as accessing truth and authenticity in lyrics, as they pertain to the artist’s own life experience and the cultural dynamic in which they find themselves.

Pianist, composer, pop/classical crossover whiz, famed reinterpreter of Radiohead music and popular host of the NPR radio show "From the Top," Christopher O'Riley will be the guest soloist for the San Francisco Girls Chorus' season-closing concerts Friday and Saturday at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He'll be bringing with him arrangements he has recently composed of four Joni Mitchell songs from the "Song to a Seagull" album, which will get their world premiere on the concerts.

Their collaborative concert, called "Truth and Beauty," will also include Vaughan Williams' "Let Beauty Awake," Claude Debussy's "Salut Printemps," Eric Whitacre's "Five Hebrew Love Songs," Stephen Paulus' "Sing Creations Music On," works by Gustav Holst, and more.

Founded in 1978, the Girls Chorus is now in transition with the nonrenewal last year of longtime director Susan McMane's contract. Working with them this spring, and preparing this final concert, is guest conductor Brandon Brack, a former member of the Bay Area's well-known male a cappella ensemble Chanticleer. Brack has been named interim director for the Chorus in its next season, which opens Nov. 12 in the Herbst Theatre and will feature Berkeley native Gabriela Lena Frank as composer-in-residence.

Joni Mitchell has long had an affinity for jazz. She was preparing to make a recording with the great Charles Mingus in 1978, but the bassist, composer and iconoclast died before the disc, Mingus, was finished. Two musicians on that album, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, became longtime friends and collaborators with the iconic Canadian singer and composer.

Local vocalist Amber Epp has an affinity for jazz and Joni Mitchell and she will perform jazz arrangements of Mitchell’s album Blue on March 29, 8 p.m., at Aqua Books. "Some of the songs sound quite different from Joni’s version, but my goal is to carry on the spirit of the original album and put a bit of myself in there, too," Epp says.

Tickets for the Jazz Machine Series, where musicians take a well-known pop or rock album and put a jazzy spin on it, are $10 at Aqua.

Where Light Falls: Songs about Joni Mitchell premieres at the Lantern Theatre on Friday March 9, and Saturday before moving to The Bluecoat Arts Centre in Liverpool on the Sunday, the 11th. More information here.

Local folk artists will band together in Germantown for a musical tribute to one of music’s most famous singer-songwriters.

Grace Griffith with Zan McLeod, Marcy Marxer and Tina Chancey, Sol & Funk Root, Cary Creed, and The Kennedys will interpret the work of Joni Mitchell during a concert Thursday, May 19, at BlackRock Center for the Arts.

Patch caught up with the Thursday’s performers ahead of the concert. They said they don’t intend to copy Mitchell’s sound, but plan to pay homage to her work, instead. Let’s meet a few of the musicians:

Celtic singer Grace Griffith has a reputation for melding musical genres when reinterpreting songs, though she also creates original work. Griffith, who is known for her 2003 Blix Street Records release, “Sands of Time,” has won numerous WAMMIE (Washington Area Music Association) awards for Best Album, Best Artist, Best Folk Album and Best Folk Artist.

At BlackRock, Griffith will perform with Zan McLeod, a multi-instrumentalist with musical roots in Appalachian folk and electric blues-rock. During the 1990s, McLeod released solo album “Highland Soul,” the success of which inspired him to enroll at the Omega Studios’ School of Applied Recording Arts and Sciences in Rockville. He eventually established Tonehouse Recording.

Also in the lineup is Marcy Marxer, whose collaboration with Cathy Fink earned Grammy wins for Best Musical Album For Children: “cELLAbration: A Tribute to Ella Jenkins” in 2004, and “Bon Appétit!” in 2003, according to the Grammy’s online database. Marxer will perform with Tina Chancey at BlackRock.

Sol & Funk Root is a guitar-bass-drum trio that blends rock, funk, blues and soul. Although the band’s music is rooted in blues, Sol dabbles with reggae, jazz, Latin, African music and R&B.

Pianist and guitarist Carey Creed taps her background in rock, Celtic music and gospel music. She named Stevie Wonder, Cheryl Wheeler and, of course, Joni Mitchell, as influences. She said Mitchell’s music inspired her to compose her own songs about social justice and love. Creed has won several vocalist WAMMIEs.

Husband-and-wife team Pete and Maura Kennedy are the two halves that make up The Kennedys --- with Maura on vocals and rhythm guitar, and Pete playing multiple instruments. The couple said they met in Austin, Texas, and had a first date at Buddy Holly’s grave, which according to their online bio, puts their relationship somewhere “between fate and a fairytale.”

"Joni Mitchell is one of the most revered musicians of the last century. She is a confidant, sister, mother, seer and a personification of the artist as archetype. Her influence as a creative muse spans further than the world of music, and many a 'lonely painter' has sought inspirations from her words and chords. Joni is an "artist's diva" - far from the glossy hooks of traditional radio pop stars, she has risen up through the record collections, mix tapes, CD jewel cases and Mp3 players - passed on from one sensitive soul to another for over four decades."

We celebrated the music of Joni Mitchell in September at our Morro Bay showcase, and the response was so strong we had to do it again. Many of the performers from that show return for an encore on Tuesday Dec. 7 at the Steynberg Gallery in SLO: Chick Tuesday, Shannon Savage, Raeme Miner & Johnee Gange, and Kay Ashley. We jazz it up with torch song vocalist Margie Nelson who will cover Joni’s “Be Cool”, which is also on Margie’s new CD “Hungry Girl”! Also performing is Human Nation jazz guitarist Adam Levine. In addition, we will add two Santa Barbarans: Karen Thurber and Tysa Goodrich, also known as Coyoteez (be sure to wish Karen “happy birthday”). More information.

SALLY Barker interprets the songs of the great Canadian singer-songwriter in The Joni Mitchell Project in The Basement at City Screen, York.

"This celebration of Joni Mitchell’s genius is much more than just a tribute act," says Mojo magazine’s Peter Doggett. "Sally Barker takes some of the most iconic and challenging songs in Joni's catalogue and makes them her own. Joni would be proud of what she has inspired."

Sally first came to attention in The Poozies. Tickets for tonight’s concert cost £8, members £7, on 0871 902 5726 or picturehouses.co.uk

Actress and jazz vocalist Kama Ruby ventures into yet another musical area this week with a concert featuring songs written or inspired by Joni Mitchell.

Well known for her sexy jazz standards and jazzy interpretations of classic and alternative rock songs, her latest performance focuses more on Mitchell's songbook, which also has been known to include a jazzy tune or two. Her set list will include Help Me, Woodstock, Jericho, and Blue among others.

Ms. Ruby, who wowed audiences a few months ago with her impersonations of Stevie Nicks and Judy Garland during her performance in The Empty Space's Jukebox Legends, is a huge fan of Mitchell.

"I think Joni Mitchell has been one of the bigger influences in my musical life. Her compositions are so rich with surprisingly complex lyrics and meter changes. I found her songs much harder to learn than I anticipated when I first thought up this project."

The concert, to be held at Don Martin's Metro Galleries in downtown Bakersfield, will showcase not only tunes written by Mitchell, but also those whose writers were inspired by Mitchell, such as Led Zeppelin's Going to California.

"I like a lot of different types of music. I guess I always wanted to be a rock star at heart," she laughed, adding, "I think it's important to embrace and learn from whatever has influenced you if you want to become better at your craft."

Joining her will be three outstanding jazz musicians from the area: Ezekiel Victor (piano), Glen Fong (bass), and Canaan McDuffie (drums). Doors open at 7:30 PM, with the concert starting at 8 PM, Thursday, Nov. 18th. Admission is $10 at the door, all ages admitted.

On Saturday evening, October 9, the performance and visual artist John Kelly will perform his celebrated Joni Mitchell tribute, Paved Paradise: The Art of Joni Mitchell, at the Crowley Theatre. Originally trained as a dancer, Kelly has been creating performance works for the past twenty-five years, "staging" the lives and works of artists such as Egon Schiele, Caravaggio, Antonin Artaud, and Jean Cocteau. He first performed his Joni Mitchell tribute in 1987; since then, he has developed the piece and toured it around the world. In 2003, in an article about Mitchell, New York Times music critic John Rockwell wrote: "Right now, the best live Joni Mitchell is the countertenor-falsettist-drag artist John Kelly in his periodic revivals of his Joni Mitchell act ... If you want to see [Joni Mitchell] in person, catch John Kelly."

There will be two performances of Paved Paradise at the Crowley Theatre on Saturday evening: one at 7:00 PM and one at 10:00. The performances are free, but as seating is limited, reservations are strongly advised.

To make a reservation, click here or call the museum office at 432 729-4362.

Joni Mitchell Tribute night, 7pm until 10pm. Benefit for the School of Music and Arts, 330 East State Street in Ithaca, New York. Many local musicians performing Joni songs to help raise scholarship money for this 50 year old community school!

Now comes word that Kelly is drawing a curtain on the show. Following two performances on Oct. 9 for the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Kelly plans to retire the piece for good. Fortunately, Austin will have another opportunity to experience the show before then, in two shows, Oct. 6 and 7 at One World Theatre. Miss them at your peril. More information.

Wilton Library's Connecticut's Own Sunday concert series takes a slight departure from chamber music on March 21, when local vocalist Suzanne Sheridan performs "Both Sides Now," a musical tribute from 4 to 5 p.m. Ms. Sheridan, a regular performer with the Exit 43 band, appeared last June at the library's annual meeting with the band, and returns for this solo performance.

The free concert is a tribute to Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Joni Mitchell's greatest hits include "Both Sides Now," "Big Yellow Taxi," "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio," and "Chelsea Morning." Cohen's discography includes "Suzanne," "Anthem," "Like a Bird on a Wire," and "Hallelujah." While reading the book Girls Like Us, Suzanne discovered that Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell were briefly involved in a love affair in the early '70s. Musically, at least, Suzanne has reunited them.

According to Ms. Sheridan, she is "a singer, songwriter and guitarist who loves connecting with people through music." She has won honors in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and has sung jingles for Pepsi, Hardees, Hasbro, Texaco and others. As a songwriter, she has penned "90 Pound Suburban Housewife Driving in Her SUV." She also is a guitarist, photographer, workshop leader and a resident of Westport. She performs in theaters, churches, hospitals and clubs, and her solo singing career has taken her internationally as well.

Wilton Library's Connecticut's Own concert series is free of charge. Advance registration is recommended. Pre-registrants must arrive by 3:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating. After 3:50 p.m., and if space is available, waitlisted and walk-in registrants will be admitted. For information, directions and to register, visit www.wiltonlibrary.org or call (203) 762-3950 ext. 213. Wilton Library is located in the heart of Wilton Center, Connecticut at 137 Old Ridgefield Road. The final concert date in the series is April 25 with Larry Shiller and Olga Gurevich.

LIMBSAKIMBO follows up it's summer tribute to Marvin Gaye with an exploration and reevaluation of the poetry, intellect, and mystery of Joni Mitchell. Lead singer Lindsay Mendez was an original cast member of the most recent Broadway revival of Grease, playing the role of Jan. She also served as a "Mennonette" to Sherie Rene Scott in the critically acclaimed Everyday Rapture at 2nd Stage Theater this past spring. She can currently be seen as Betty Jean in The Marvelous Wonderettes at the Westside Theater.

Guitarist and arranger Michael Aarons has worked with Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Barry Manilow, Patti LaBelle, Paul McCartney, Luther Vandross, Michael McDonald, James Ingram, Liza Minnelli, Elton John and others. 35th Anniversary Celebration of Joni Mitchell

When: 8 p.m. Saturday, November 21
Where: Concerts at the Crossing, 268 Washington Crossing-Pennington Road, Titusville
Admission: $23 at the door; concertsatthecrossing.com

When musician Joni Mitchell released her album "Court and Spark" in 1974, she dared to do something different.

The songstress was deliberately stepping away from the folk rock niche that had gained her adoration and scores of publicity and fans.

It was time to experiment with other sounds: jazz and jazz fusion. The process paid off. she later won a Grammy award for the album for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s).

Thirty-five years later, a group of musicians in their own right are paying tribute to Mitchell's release of "Court and Spark" and her decades of inspiring music that followed the album.

Tomorrow night at Concerts at the Crossing in Titusville, singer/songwriter Maura Kennedy is leading the 35th anniversary celebration.

Joining Kennedy will be three of her favorite musical friends including Sloan Wainwright, Kelly Flint and LisaBeth (with Maggie Marshall).

A fundraising event where the entire "Blue" album will be performed by Tina Bell and other local musicians - in collaboration with The Friends of Downs View charity to raise awareness of music therapy, and raise funds so that children at the school and in the local community can continue to benefit from it. The evening will include live music, an insight into music therapy, a fund raising auction and raffle with fantastic prizes.

The organization is appealing to local businesses with strong community links to support our efforts with a donation for our auction/raffle. We would be grateful for anything you can provide – all monies raised will go directly towards funding music therapy for these children. The main performance will be Joni Mitchell’s ‘Blue’ album, sung by Tina Bell and guest stars – so donations of blue items to continue the theme would be fantastic. All donors will be thanked and acknowledged at the event.

From the jazz festival website:

The 10th Feminist Theory and Music symposium will take place on the University of North Carolina - Greensboro campus in historic Greensboro, North Carolina, from May 27-31. Those in the area won't want to miss Paper Session 7 on Saturday, May 30 from 2:00-4:30 PM. Lloyd 'Chip' Whitesell, author of the book The Music of Joni Mitchell will be giving a talk entitled The Influence of Laura Nyro on Joni Mitchell.

Here is Chip's own abstract on the talk:

While Joni Mitchell is usually sparing in her praise of her contemporaries (especially female figures), she has always spoken highly of Laura Nyro. Nyro's career was shorter-lived than Mitchell's, and awareness of the originality and importance of her music has faded. But in the late 1960s, when Mitchell was launching her recording career, Nyro was touted by critics and peers as a leading artist in the new singer-songwriter genre. Mitchell admits, "Laura exerted an influence on me. I looked to her and took some direction from her." My aim is to identify what this influence consisted of. Nyro's second and third albums (Eli and the Thirteenth Confession [1968], New York Tendaberry [1969]) will exemplify characteristics of her style. While one can point to a few specific mannerisms picked up by Mitchell, more crucial are general aesthetic directions as evident in matters of form, performance and artistic vision. Before the encounter, Mitchell tended to refine even the most painful subjects through a restrained, decorative filter. Piano-centered, Nyroesque songs first appear on Mitchell's third album, Ladies of the Canyon (1970), while Blue (1971) and For the Roses (1972) exhibit the most pervasive influence. By contrasting specific songs before and after 1969 I show how Mitchell explored a musical vein pioneered by Laura Nyro.

More info can be found at the Symposium's website.

On August 14, 2008 at 7:30 pm Strathmore Hall (Washington DC area) presents A TRIBUTE TO JONI MITCHELL in the Music Center at Strathmore. This will be the 5th Strathmore tribute show produced by Bandhouse Gigs, showcasing an amazing array of D.C. based talent to honor an esteemed musical artist. Previous Strathmore Summer Concert Series finales have paid tribute to the music of Nils Lofgren in 2004, The Band (2005), and Neil Young (2006). All were held on the Strathmore lawn and each drew crowds in excess of 4,000. In 2007 the show moved inside to the state of the art 1,970 seat Music Center for a sold out show paying tribute to the music of Bob Dylan.

This year's Tribute to Joni Mitchell will celebrate one of the most heralded songwriters and artists in popular music. Over the course of her remarkable 40+ year career, Joni Mitchell has explored and expanded the boundaries of folk, rock, pop, and jazz, crafting classics including Both Sides Now, Woodstock, & Help Me. Joni Mitchell has recorded more than 25 albums and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Her music continues to influence several generations of artists and fans.

Almost 50 area performers will be participating in the tribute, including popular veterans like Mary Ann Redmond, Jon Carroll, Naked Blue, and John Jennings (Mary Chapin Carpenter) ; respected artists such as Carey Creed, Chaise Lounge, Esther Haynes, Deeme Katson, Cal Everett, One Horse Town, and Diane Rosenthal; and electrifying new talents Luke Brindley, Laura Burhenn (Georgie James), LEA, Margot MacDonald, and Chelsea Lee. Other musicians performing in the show include current Eagles guitarist Steuart Smith (who recorded with Joni Mitchell on 'Turbulent Indigo'), drummers Timm Biery and Andy Hamburger, bassists Scott Ambush (Spyro Gyra) & Scott Giambusso, guitarists Dan Hovey and Keith Grimes (Eva Cassady), saxophonists Al Williams & Wayne Sulc, conguero Cesar Vanegas, and keyboardists Bill Starks, John Hurd, and Daniel Brindley.

Bandhouse Gigs is comprised of Ronnie Newmyer, Chuck Sullivan, David Sless, and Danny Schwartz. Newmyer and Sullivan are veteran musicians, Schwartz is a musician and ace audio engineer, and Sless has spent more than 33 years coordinating and stage managing live events and mixing sound at a variety of area venues.

The tribute series began in 2004 when Strathmore and WAMA partnered to present the Washington Timeline Concert Series, a yearlong event recognizing nationally acclaimed D.C. based musicians. Newmyer and Sullivan were asked to organize a tribute concert to honor guitarist Nils Lofgren as a finale to the series. That wildly successful effort has evolved into a popular annual event that serves to showcase the diverse and richly talented music scene in the D.C. area. Strathmore, under the guidance of artistic director Shelley Brown, has collaborated with Bandhouse Gigs to put together these unique and inspiring shows that cap off each Summer Concert Series.

"This show is not the typical tribute show," reports producer Maree Gallagher of TR Creative Services, "It will not be a marathon of Joni covers, but rather a showcase of each artist's originals while incorporating a few of their favorite Joni songs. Each of these artists cite Joni as a major influence on their music, and the best way to demonstrate that influence is by sharing their own works."

The Make your Mark Artspace & Coffeehouse, a cozy, non-smoking, vegetarian cafe, has been hosting live acoustic music once per month since May. Owners Hemi Braunstein and Amy Siebert, both Joni-philes themselves, are excited to host this special all ages show. "Admission is free, but tips are encouraged and go directly to the artists." remarked Braunstein. "We'll have our delicious food available by advance reservation and those over 21 are welcome to BYOB."

The concert runs from 5pm to 10pm and seating and space is limited, so Joni fans are encouraged to get there early. Starting things off will be emerging local artist Hayley, whose sound is a mix of Sarah McLachlan and Natalie Merchant, but whose writing is strongly influenced by Joni.

San Francisco Joni fans have a chance to enjoy a new interpretation of her music this month when American Conservatory Theater's Young Conservatory (YC) presents Ladies of the Canyon: The Music of Joni Mitchell. In an A.C.T. press release, Creator/Director Craig Slaight says "I was drawn to Joni Mitchell by her immense skills as a musician and poet ... her music is universal, ageless, and the perfect source for dramatic interpretation." The entire program is sung, solo and in ensemble, with each of the 24 songs in the show presented as a dramatic scene.

Ladies of the Canyon: The Music of Joni Mitchell is the latest production in YC's New Plays Program, which focuses on "creating theatrical explorations of the works of contemporary composers, with the goal of creating pieces that look at the world through youthful eyes." Earlier productions have been conceived around the music of Simon and Garfunkel, as well as around the music of Bob Dylan (the Bob Dylan show was also staged at the National Theatre in London).

With musical direction by Krista Wigle and music adaptation by Naomi Sanchez, the show opens June 5 and runs through June 19 at Zeum Theater, at Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. Tickets are available by calling 415.749.2228, online at the A.C.T. website, or at the door.

Coffee House, the new cabaret series presented at New York City's Daryl Roth Theatre Complex's D-Lounge, will continue Sept. 26 with an evening celebrating the music of Joni Mitchell.

Among those scheduled to interpret the tunes of the famed singer-songwriter are Lisa Asher, Brandon Cutrell, Sarajean Devenport, Baby Jane Dexter, Tim DiPasqua, Michael Holland, Karen Mack, Liz McCartney and Rachel Ulanet. Show time is 7 PM.

Phil Geoffrey Bond will direct the concert, which will feature musical direction by Ray Fellman.

Joni Mitchell's numerous songs include "Both Sides Now," "Eastern Rain," "A Case of You," "The Circle Game," "Big Yellow Taxi," "All I Want," "River" and "Chelsea Morning."

Liz McCartney starred on Broadway in Mamma Mia!, Taboo, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and the short-lived musical Dance of the Vampires. She also spent nearly two years in the Boston production of Nunsense, and her regional credits include Paint Your Wagon, The Rocky Horror Show and Fifty Million Frenchmen. McCartney was recently seen Off-Broadway in the musical Bingo.

The Daryl Roth Theatre is located at 101 E. 15th Street. There is a $10 cover charge and a two-drink minimum for each evening. Call (212) 375-1110, ext. 3 for reservations or e-mail dloungeroth@aol.com.

The Prairie Theatre Exchange in Winnipeg unveils Joni Mitchell: River this weekend, a new production that PTE artistic director Allen MacInnis describes as a "theatrical concert." Using 28 of Joni's songs, the imaginitively conceived segments making up the production touch a variety of subjects Joni addresses in her deft descriptions of what she's called "the arc of human relationships." MacInnis's Joni-inspired creations include "Falling in Love," "Psych Ward" and "Wisdom," in addition to other segments devoted to Joni's world view on war, big business and morality. Instead of dialogue, the actors use lyrics in solo and group performances to tell their stories. Musical arrangments for the show's songs, which include Big Yellow Taxi, Carey, A Case of You, Shadows and Light, Help Me and Woodstock, are by guitarist Greg Lowe. Joni Mitchell: River runs through February 10.

Originally founded in 1973 as the Manitoba Theatre Workshop, The Prairie Theatre Exchange teaches theatre for adults and children, and began to produce adult works in 1981; notable past productions include a production of George Ryga's The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, with aboriginal actors playing the aboriginal roles.

Stumped: Joni was the subject of one of the clues (in the Grammy Award category) last night on Jeopardy! (All right, I know it's not exactly a major news flash, but things have been kind of slow lately.) The clue: "She won a Grammy in 2000 for her Both Sides Now -- we loved her in the 60s." The clueless: Contestant number one buzzed in with the question "Who is Barbra Streisand?" There's a couple hundred bucks up in smoke.

Tonight, there'll be a concert in NYC's Central Park called "Joni's Jazz." Well, it's more than a concert, it's a cultural event. Singers and musicians will be performing songs written by Joni, including a complete performance of the album Hejira! This should be quite special! The official JM.COM reporter for the show will be Patrick Leader, who will be sending in his review the morning after.
