Joni Mitchell, Nelly Furtado win SOCANs

Singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell was honoured Monday night at the 13th annual SOCAN awards for her contribution in bringing international recognition to Canada through her work.

The renowned singer was presented with the Wm. Harold Moon Award at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto on Monday night.

The SOCAN Awards are organized by the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada, which collects and distributes performing-rights royalties. The awards recognizes artists who achieve the most airplay on domestic radio film and TV airplay in 2001.

Myles Goodwyn, of the rock band April Wine, received the National Achievement Award for his success in the Canadian music industry. Formed in 1969, April Wine, released several albums and went onto become an international success.

Claudette Fortier was awarded the special achievement award. Ms. Fortier, was the former general manager of the Society for Reproduction Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers in Canada, and is currently their copyright and business development adviser. She has championed the rights of music creators and publishers for more than a quarter of a century.

In the pop category singer Nelly Furtado's songs I'm Like a Bird and Turn Off the Light were given nods for achieving the greatest number of performances on domestic radio.

Alternative rockers Nickelback won in the rock music category for How You Remind Me, fast-rising singer Carolyn Dawn Johnson won for Complicated and Downtime in the country music category. Among the other winners were Celtic band Leahy who won in the folk/ roots category for Down That Road and hip-hop artist Kardinal Offishall in the urban music category for Money Jane.

SOCAN will hand out awards to music creators from Quebec at an awards ceremony in Montreal on Tuesday.
