(12/12/01, 7 a.m. ET) -- Joni Mitchell, Al Green, Rosemary Clooney, late bandleader-pianist Count Basie, and late crooner Perry Como have been announced as the 2002 recipients of the Recording Academy's lifetime-achievement awards.
Also being honored are the late pioneering disc jockey Alan Freed and producer-engineer Tom Dowd, who will both receive the coveted Trustees Award. The winners will be officially acknowledged during a Grammy-week ceremony held in conjunction with the 44th annual Grammy Awards ceremony on February 27.
The lifetime-achievement award honors an artist's lifelong contribution to the recording medium, while the Trustees Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the recording industry in a non-performing capacity. Michael Green, president and CEO of the Recording Academy, said of those being recognized, "The recipients of these awards are in a rarified league all their own. They are a prestigious group of diverse and influential creators who have given us some of the most distinctive and seminal recordings of the last century. Their outstanding achievements have left a timeless legacy that has changed the world socially and has given voice to our cultural condition. Their work exemplifies the highest creative and technical standards by which we all measure our own personal and professional contributions."
