NORTHFIELD — Singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell will headline the second program in the Northfield and Mount Hermon School Entertainment Series Nov. 16 in the Northfield Auditorium.
Sharing the stage with Miss Mitchell will be The Hello People, a sextet that combines mime with song and music.
Miss Mitchell, a Canadian by birth, began her career in Calgary and then moved to Toronto where she found work in a number of coffee houses. She came to Detroit in 1966 and a short time later to New York City, where she was "discovered" by Reprise Records.
Accompanying herself on the guitar, Miss Mitchell sings her own compositions. She has composed approximately 60 songs each a comment on life, love and observations of every day happenings. Her songs are included in the repertories of such singers as Judy Collins, Ian and Sylvia, and Dave van Ronk.
The Hello People combine basic acting and mime to enhance their musical program which run the gamut from satirical rock to jazz to ballads. They appear on stage in white face, an attempt on their part to defeat the "cult of personality" that usually surrounds members of successful pop groups. In keeping with this their identities are undisclosed. Their stage names are Goodfellow, singer and bass player; Country, a former folk singer - Thump Thump, the drummer, Wry One, a woodwind musician; Much More, organ and piano player; and Smoothie, another woodwind man and singer.
Tickets for the program will be available at the box office the night of the performance.
