Would-be crashers tear down fence at Drug Clinic benefit

About 100 Joni Mitchell fans last night tore down about 80 feet of cyclone fence in an attempt to crash her Drug Clinic benefit show at the Waikiki Shell. Few of them got in.

They were among an estimated 350 fans who sat outside on the grass in Kapiolani Park from the show's 8 p.m. curtain.

Seven special duty policemen and 20 Drug Clinic volunteers inside the fence tried to "talk down" a group that began shaking the fence about 8:45 p.m.

Beer and wine bottles began flying and police radioed for reinforcements as the fence fell at 9:35 p.m. Within 15 minutes, six officers in patrol cars and on motorcycles had dispersed the crowd.

Sgt. Henry Robinson was struck on the head by a quart beer bottle thrown by someone in the crowd, but his cap prevented injury, he said. A wine bottle shattered the windshield of Officer Russell Lane's motorcycle.
