The Canadian National Exhibition has announced the first four of 12 or 13 big-name acts to be seen at this year's fair, and following the protests about foreign acts in previous years, three of the four are Canadian. The fair hopes to sign as many as five Canadian headliners.
The Canadian stars so far are the rock trio Rush, to been seen Aug. 23; the Irish Rovers, long-ago immigrants, appearing with Vera Lynn on Aug. 25; and Paul Anka, a long-ago emigrant, Sept. 4.
Canadian record industry circles have revealed that the CNE is also negotiating with Joni Mitchell and Burton Cummings to come to this year's CNE. The fail will not release their names officially, however, until contracts have been signed. The CNE also expects to sign some Canadian supporting acts.
The only import signed so far is country singer Charley Pride, to appear Aug. 30, but the CNE is negotiating with The Bay City Rollers and Beach Boys, among others.
The fair also announced that the Scottish World Festival would return, for the sixth year, from Aug. 18 through 21.
The grandstand will also have Blue Jay baseball games on the evenings of Aug. 26 en Sept. 5, as well as on five afternoons. There will be an Argonaut football game on the CNE's opening night, Aug. 17, as usual.
