Joni Mitchell calls for greater environmental awareness

SAN FRANCISCO: Singer-songwriter and environmentalist Joni Mitchell says education may be one way to help rebalance nature.

Mitchell says clear-cutting of trees as the world's population soars is causing an ecological imbalance. She also spoke out against uranium mining for nuclear weapons and overuse of sonar which some say is a cause of whale beachings and other, similar incidents.

Mitchell says that to be a nature lover right now is to be in "terrible pain." She says many things are going wrong while others seem to be uncorrectable.

Mitchell gave an Earth Day speech yesterday to San Francisco's Commonwealth club.
