"Consider a Donation"

I have been a loyal Joni Mitchell fan for as long as she has been recording, and was truly lucky to have been in Coconut Grove, FL during the times she visited the coffee clubs. However, today I have to say "shame on you Joni" for not supporting (financially) the Web site. This new Web site is fantastic and serves to forward her agenda to the world and certainly promote her work. It would be a small token of thanks to those whose efforts have kept this site going. I don't have a problem with the donation; I was wondering if Joni ever provides any direction to the site. Along with being multi-talented she is also a great teacher to her fans; i.e. approach to music, being a wordsmith, understanding art, dance to name a few. I have seen other artists recommend recent books they've read, art or issues that concern them. It would be great if she had some input into the site; its always a pleasure to read what's she's thinking.

Kathy, funny you should say this. My husband said the same thing when I had him look around the new website. This is like reading the words that he spoke outloud. He is not a fan of Joni's but was quite irritated about these same things. He feels SHE should make this her business to familiarize herself with these things. I found myself defending Joni. I personally think Joni is so computer illiterate she doesn't realize the magnitude and importance of this sight or the web itself. Think of it, GREEN FLAG SONG was inspired from some old, broken TV she kept watching & wouldn't replace. So, I would think her manager(s) would be appreciative of this website and make it THEIR business to clue Joni in on, not only the importance of this website, (and the internet as a whole), but help her understand & educate her about the costs involved and the pulse of the fans here. As far as Joni posting, I'm praying Joni starts hanging more with computer literate friends (like Rosie O. who likes to blog) or gets herself a new boyfriend that hangs on the computer all day forcing her to find out what's competing for her attention! I would think Joni would like to write down her thoughts or opinions or occasionally chat with fans and answer questions about her paintings, song lyrics, etc. being able to ignore questions she choses not to answer. SOMEONE needs to get her excited about the internet and then I think her generous spirit would shine on this fantastic website. Can someone arrange for Joni and I to do lunch?! I'll bring my laptop.

Siquomb. Your reply was generous and insightful. Those times I spoke of in the Grove were the most magical of my life. My best friend Rochelle and I would sneak out of the house to go to the Grove (a few blocks away) to hear the likes of Fred Neil, Vince Martin, Estrella Barracini, Townes Van Zant, Bob Ingram, Jerry Jeff Walker, David Bromberg, Bill Lillard, and others. We spent many enchanted nights in that intimate, small, coffee house listening to the songs and stories of these very talented and gifted artists. Everybody knocked about town and these folks were just "folks" and were part of the community. No super star treatment there. These times will never be imitated. We were so full of hope and felt we could change the world. That is why I was disappointed in Joni not participating. Those folks began something for which we are now seeing results. It's important, it a lot of ways, for this site to be "about" Joni and not "devoted" to her. The last thing I would want is for jonimitchell.com to become an aspect of some outside marketing scheme, or be dependent on others, even if it's Joni herself.

KMLakewood   2009-Apr-05 at 07:16:29
Hello, Dameron. I wasn't suggesting anything of the sort. I feel Joni herself could pick up the tab rather than let those creating and maintaining the site have to shoulder the cost. I believe the yearly cost would be very modest to her, but perhaps a hardship on those fans who are shouldering them. Kathy M. (ps - I belive this site already is already devoted!)  (edited: 2009-Apr-06 at 07:12:11)

Eh, I think I understand Joni wanting to maintain her privacy. You can hear it in her songs. Do artists really owe anything to society? I agree; it's unfortunate that she's made herself inaccessible, but at least we have the gifts of her music and art to enjoy.

I'm a website coordinator from Boston and I can tell you that because of the problems that other artists have had with their sites, harrassment, inappropriate comments, etc, it is unlikely that an artist can have direct contact with cyberspace. Regarding donations, James Taylor never supported his website and this must be a liability issue. The website resembles a work of art so you know that Ms. Mitchell was involved in the design.
