...those double disc, expanded, re-issues of some of Joni's cds? I think it was a year or two back now that Court & Spark,Hejira & Hissing were scheduled to be re-released with extra tracks/demos etc.
I'm pretty sure they even appeared as available for pre-order on various sites. |

I have listened to Joni since Blue. She has gone through so many different types of music and musicians. My favorite era being a
bass player and an avid Jaco fan was the albums with Jaco on it.
Hejira was the most amazing first start with Jaco, but as it got with more albums with him ,some were down right stupid. Don Juan's Reckless
Daughter, come on a whole side one song. I would like to get know how did you feel, did you like early Joni, or with Tom Scott and the LA express.with Jaco,or with the new stuff like Shine? It would be interesting to find out. |

Does anyone have anything to say about a piece that is on an album that seems like it is out of place (as in, maybe it seems like it should have been a previous album or a subsequent album based on the way it feels - "genre" if you must use that term)?
The one instance I can think of for me is In France on Hissing. I know that I have popped in Hissing and methodically skipped to Edith as the first thing I would hear ample times. In France seems like a Court and Spark piece - I think. Jungle Line, well, I skip over that one because it is not that easy to digest, but I do like it when I am ready for it - I just don't dig it at any point in time, but that's just me. The rest/bulk of Hissing seems like it goes together, with Shadows of Light as a bit of a graduation ceremony piece.
I guess it is the fact that Hissing STARTS OUT with In France that makes me wonder. There is a natural progression/diversion with Blue Room on Hejira as far its placement goes, and it is a piece that departs from the others, just doesn't stand apart somehow.
Seems like In France (forget about Jungle Line - or is that part of the point, given the African roots to a ton of music) is the one song that seems like it is placed on an album "deliberately," whether ti is in the same vein or not.
Does anybody else have this reaction? Does the placement of In France at the start of Hissing equate to a decision to show growth (so much more jazzy stuff to follow after this rocky piece, and by the way, Joni Mitchell has depth)?
