The Mitchells To Close Folk Singing Program Print-ready version

September 1965

Popular folk-singers Chuck and Joni Mitchell will sing in the SU Red Door Room tomorrow. They sang last Wednesday in Red Door and have also appeared at the Chessmate Gallery.

Students in the Red Door last Wednesday afternoon heard folk music at its best. Chuck and Joni Mitchell, husband and wife folk singing team, have been performing in the Detroit area for the last month.

Each song the sang in their Red Door performance, whether an old classic or a Mitchell original came alive, filling the room with its warmth and meaning.

JONI is a native of Saskatoon, Canada, and was featured at the internationally famous Canadian Mariposa Folk Festival with such greats in folk music as Ian and Sylvia and John Hammond.

This fall Joni is going to be featured on a television program called "Let's Sing Out" seen on CKLW-TV Sunday evenings at 9 p.m.

CHUCK Mitchell, from New York, has sung at the Retort, the Raven Gallery and other night spots in Detroit. He met his wife at a coffee house in Toronto where she was singing.

Like most folk singers, the Mitchells do sing protest songs. But they protest about things of their own choosing. As Joni says with tongue in cheek: "We don't protest war and the like. We would rather protest against things like studying!"

One of the songs which Joni wrote and sings is a protest song against the coming of winter. She says she doesn't like the cold.

TONIGHT the Mitchells will play, again in the Rathskeller. The show will start at 9:15 p.m. and an admission charge of 50 cents will be taken at the door.

This show will end the SUB's program of folk groups in the Rathskeller on Friday nights. Following Union Week, the Friday night entertainment will consist of bands and dancing in a night club atmosphere.
