Folk legend Joni Mitchell is looking for a daughter she gave up for adoption shortly after leaving art school in Calgary. "The good news is that I'm clean now, and I have no skeletons," said Mitchell, 53, who attended Alberta College of Art in the 1960s. "But I worry, because there are a lot of things she should know, her genetic background, what diseases she's prone to."
Mitchell, 53, was born Roberta Joan Anderson on Nov. 7, 1943 in Fort Macleod, about 120 km south of Calgary. She registered for a four-year Fine Art Advanced Diploma at ACA -- then a division of SAIT -- in 1963/64. But she dropped out after only two semesters. Classmates say she was talented and popular.
Mitchell said it would be nice if her only child "could meet her grandparents while they're still alive." Joni Mitchell's mother, Myrtle Anderson of Saskatoon, Sask., said she'd like to see her granddaughter. She added: "We would have been supportive if we had only known." She said she wasn't told she was a grandmother until many years after the fact. The adoption took place in early 1965. "She was too embarrassed." Anderson said she didn't like seeing Mitchell's life publicized. "It's Joni's fault this is coming out now; she's too open and frank about it," said her mom. "This is really embarrassing."
Mitchell's search has lead her only as far as the hospital in Toronto that handled the adoption.
