Internet: Pop-themed fridges, cars and marriage partners? Yup, just log on.

The internet is generally seen as a place where bands can sell their CDs without Babylonish record companies taking all the profits. But it doesn't end there: pop stars old and new are turning to online auctioneer eBay to make that special contact with the fans.

Billy Idol, for example, has customised a fridge with a self-portrait and lyrics, and is selling it for the American Muscular Dystrophy Association. Meanwhile, Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch recently used eBay to flog Max, his 1973 Ford Granada, and raised £4,000 for Friends Of The Earth Scotland. "Please someone buy him and preserve him so I can come round and see him," pleaded Stu of the car on the sleeve of last year's I'm Waking Up To Us single.

A different, but no less vital, kind of exchange has also been taking place on the internet Joni Mitchell discussion list. List www.jmdl.com webmaster Mags Brei - self-styled Ambassador of Love - found her husband Brian through the site and has set up a dating service for members. To find the Joni fan for you, you'll have to answer favorite questions like 'Favorite Joni Album?' and 'How Do You Roll The Toilet Paper?' It's unknown if Joni approves, but she has broken cover to slag the music industry. "It's a cesspool," she opined.

Note: The facts are a tad skewed in this article; Mags is not the webmaster nor is her last name 'Brei', but who's keeping score anyway? :-)
